💡Tip: If you post
#CreativeCommons content on
#youtube and want to encourage the redistribution of the content, please provide an alternate download address. The current process of downloading media from youtube involves either A) paying for youtube premium, in order to enable the "Download" button or B) using "yt_dlp" or similar tools, which some argue involves breaking the Section 1201 of the DMCA (*). Youtube adds new barriers for users to access its content (such as ID checks or Adblocker-blockers) and will keep adding them as long as users have no viable alternatives.
*: it already happened before, in 2020, when the tool was attacked with a takedown request (
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/github-reinstates-youtube-dl-after-riaas-abuse-dmca ,
https://github.blog/news-insights/policy-news-and-insights/standing-up-for-developers-youtube-dl-is-back/ ). At the time, the claim that reverted the takedown was that Youtube didn't implement an effective "technical protection measure", so youtube-dl couldn't be accused of "circumventing a technical protection measure" in the sense indicated by the Section 1201, but the technical details are not guaranteed to remain the same in the future.
