Ah yes, the two genders.

To be clear, there are some very valid reasons an #autistic person may actually choose to refer to themselves as a #personwithautism, the same as someone might say person with #disabilities, and also as a person with #BPD I get frustrated because there is no good way to say "I'm Borderline" without getting weird looks from people.

Both ways are acceptable, one is called Person First language and the other Identity First language. Both PFL and IFL have pros and cons. PFL tries to put the human being first, but groups that want to 'cure Autism' (ugh) tend to use PFL which has gotten PFL in hot water. IFL puts the #identity first and claims confident ownership, #dispelling #shame and raising awareness, but can sometimes feel like you are entrenching yourself in #stigma, which can become heavy and burdensome.

Ultimately it's less important which one is used than it is to ensure you are using whatever an individual person -requests- you to use, period.

And no, you do not get to argue with that. It is equally important to also be cautious about #gatekeeping others and how they identify themselves, even if you wouldn't choose something for yourself.

I prefer person-first language. I have BPD, #anxiety, #ASD and #SPD. If introducing some of my mental health challenges to others, I usually stop at BPD only to keep it brief.
