Restaurant successes last weekend:

Had the Chicago-style pizza at Japes, delicioussss. So good I'll try their inverse-Chicago fluffy London-style next time.

And went to #Dishoom for lunch, whoo, yeah, different level from my local options, no disrespect. Especially just that taste of the first bite, so nice, and perfect for me in terms of heat; lucky.

(I want to at least obliquely criticize a certain unmentionable aspect of the decor though, which seemed like a weird choice.)

After cooking from Dishoom book since pandemic, got a chance to compare my interpretation with the real thing.

The verdict? I was not too far off. Selfpat on the back, Julia.

Gunpowder potatoes — for the carnivore that I am — are still my absolute favorite from the book and from the restaurant.

Okra chips are such an interesting way with this vegetable.

Fantastic broccoli salad — unfortunately, not in the book.

Breads are breads — always good.

Lamb curries and condiments so deeply flavored you want to lick the bowls.

Some people look down on Dishoom for their adaptations towards mainstream. They probably have westernized to a certain degree but the way they did it worked.

As far as chain restaurants go, I was really surprised by how much I ended up loving Dishoom. I, like most Indian folks in the diaspora, am very picky with Indian cuisine and this restaurant was just so good! They serve food specifically influenced by Mumbai. The keema pav actually sent little ripples of joy down my spine and I've thought about the kheer creme brulee at least once a day, everyday, since I went here. Also, the espresso martini pictured is a spicy chai espresso martini which I have mixed feelings about, because why defile chai or an espresso martini in this manner? Anyways, the last thing I want to say about this chain is that each location is unique and the one I went to in Kensington had live music (they were all dressed in formal attire and playing what I'm going to call Mumbai jazz). Overall, was very into the whole vibe and I def recommend it if you're in the UK. London, 2022.

Was I very tired after working 7-12 yesterday and then driving from Durham to Edinburgh, and needing to do the return journey this evening as I am back at work first thing tomorrow morning? Yes.
