"Federal science agencies facing a ‘generational loss,’ nonprofit says."

"Currently, there are about 726,000 federal employees working at science-related agencies…That’s after a decrease of close to 118,000 federal employees working in scientific fields between September 2024 and February 2026…While the federal workforce overall has shrunk by about 12% under the Trump administration, a large portion of those staffing losses, roughly 40%, came from science-related agencies, the report found."

Federal science agencies facing a ‘generational loss,’ nonprofit says

New research from the Partnership for Public Service finds that many science agencies were cut deeply in the Trump administration’s workforce overhauls.

The Office of Management and Budget (#OMB) proposed regulation changes would give political appointees complete control over federal grants, from vetting to termination at any point for any reason, and that's just the beginning. I’s critical that as many public comments are submitted as possible by the July 13th deadline: https://www.regulations.gov/document/OMB-2026-0034-0001.

#DefendResearch has Action Hours every Tues. at 11am ET through June 30th, register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeaNR6o3EBtUcISYw50-SfaFuNuj20x7mrc-Dznq9Dfm2QYPw/viewform?usp=preview

Update. Here's the #ADA side of the controversy. It was just following the law requiring nonprofit orgs to be nonpartisan.
https://diabetes.org/newsroom/press-releases/american-diabetes-associations-statement-regarding-nonpartisanship

PS: A few points in reply:
* Then why did the ADA flagship journal publish the pro-science, Trump-critical editorial in the first place? Is the ADA now saying that was a mistake? Will it try to retract that editorial?
* The members distributing copies of the editorial were not acting for the association. Or if that was not clear, what if they'd made clear (as the authors of the editorial made clear) that they were only speaking for themselves, not for the ADA?
* Could the ADA preserve its nonpartisanship by disavowing the peaceful leafleteers? Did it think federal law required it to call the police to remove them from the building?
* Would the ADA have called the police on peaceful pro-Trump or pro-Battacharya leafleteers?
* Would it have called the police on attendees who sat quietly in their seats wearing "We stand with science" buttons?

The American Diabetes Association’s Statement Regarding Nonpartisanship | American Diabetes Association

As many of you are now aware, an incident took place at the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Scientific Sessions.

"The Bethesda Declaration: One Year Later."
https://www.27unihted.org/bethesda-declaration-one-year-later

"Today, on June 9, 2026, we provide an update to members of Congress and the public on the current status of #NIH, one year after the #BethesdaDeclaration. The chaos of 2025 has been replaced with coordinated, systematic, institutionalized destruction in 2026. NIH policy directed by #HHS and the Office of Management and Budget (#OMB) and implemented by Director Bhattacharya continues to flout ethical, statutory, and legal standards…
* Concern 1: An anti-science agenda is disrupting research for health advances and cures
* Concern 2: Discriminatory policies are worsening disparities
* Concern 3: Ignoring ethical standards has put research participants and the public at risk
* Concern 4: An unstable research environment is undermining scientific advances and public trust
* Concern 5: Lost critical expertise is hindering the NIH mission
* Concern 6: Changing of policies without staff input is creating foreseeable damage
* Concern 7: Cumbersome and shifting processes are wasting resources and harming health
* Concern 8: Disruption of global research is endangering people in the United States and around the world
* Concern 9: A culture of fear and low morale is eroding scientific integrity."

Update. After the American Diabetes Association (#ADA) physically evicted five members from an ADA event for peacefully handing out print copies of a pro-science, anti-Trump editorial published in the ADA's own flagship journal …
https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/121657

* two senior leaders resigned in protest -- the new President-Elect and the chair of the Scientific Sessions Planning Committee;
* at least two others might have resigned, but these reports are still unconfirmed;
* dozens of members walked out of the presidential address, holding signs that said "We stand with science"; and
* colleagues launched a "shame on you" open letter against the ADA.

#DefendResearch June Action Hours: OMB Proposed Regulation Change Responses

#DefendResearch is hosting weekly Action Hours throughout June to help people submit comments about the latest OMB proposed regulation changes ("Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance") that would have disastrous consequences for research, and thus all of us. While we are not experts in federal regulation comment submission, we have pulled together and will be sharing key resources created by the scholarly community to make it easy for all of us to take this important action. This includes guidance from former NIH Senior Program Officer Elizabeth Ginexi, who offered this advice: "You do not need to be an expert. You need to describe, in your own words, how your community, your program, your state, or your work depends on stable, merit-based federal grants and what it would mean to lose that. Cite the specific section that would hurt your community."

The flagship journal of the American Diabetes Association (#ADA) just published an editorial criticizing the #Trump admin for attempting to "Dismantle and Destroy Biomedical Research in the United States."
https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/49/6/901/164764/Misguided-Brushes-of-a-Pen-Continue-to-Dismantle

At an ADA conference yesterday, some members tried to pass out copies of the editorial just before #NIH Director #JayBhattacharya was scheduled to speak. They were blocked by security and escorted out of the building by police. The ADA had called in the police. Bhattacharya cancelled his talk.
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/05/well/ada-conference-diabetes-trump.html

PS: What's going on at the ADA? The editorial had a disclaimer saying that it only represented the views of the authors, not the association. But the association had the courage to publish it. Then the association blocked its distribution, at its own conference, even calling in the police. Does it support free speech, even in support of science? Or not? And why can police stop peaceful scientists from handing out an editorial, even at an event sponsored by the group publishing the editorial?

Update. "Feds failing in bid to take a supercomputer from a climate research center."
https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/06/judge-blocks-part-of-trump-admins-effort-to-hurt-colorado-research-center/

The judge ruled that the Trump admin failed "to articulate any rationale" for its action (violating the Administrative Procedures Act) and was "meant to pressure Colorado’s Democratic governor about an unrelated matter."

"Trump Administration to Dismantle Ocean Monitoring System."
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/climate/ocean-observatories-initiative.html

"The Trump administration is dismantling a $368 million deep-ocean observation system that was put in place a decade ago to monitor coastal environments, marine ecosystems and powerful currents that affect the global #climate. The #NSF said it would send ships in June to begin removing more than 900 deep-sea instruments anchored off Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, North Carolina, and an area between Greenland and Iceland known as the Irminger Sea."
