Social Network User Data Storage

Undead SearXNG
Years ago, I got Searx, the predecessor to SearXNG, up and running on Undead Network. It worked reasonably well. SearXNG https://github.com/searxng/searxng is a meta search engine that you run yourself. It searches the well-known search engines and transfers the results. You can configure very precisely which search engines are queried. If I understand correctly, the advantage of SearXNG is that search queries are distributed across the various instances, making it very difficult to create a profile of the individual instances. If it works that way, it would be awesome. Another step towards a decentralized internet. It's been running quite stable for a few days now. I just haven't figured out how to customize the look yet ;) https://search.undeadnetwork.de

Eigentlich wollen wir doch alle weg von #WhatsApp. Und auch #Telegram ist keine dauerhafte Lösung. Ja selbst #Signal ist ein zentraler Dienst, mit USA #cloudact relevanz.

Tinkered around with the bsky / at protocol around a few days ago (more like a week lol), in an attempt to create an fully decentral account / identity where no parts are owned by an copoeration. And to my surprires you can actually not only host the account data yourself (called a PDS) but also the whole identity itself!

Wrote a (rather long) blog post about the journey and how to achieve it; check it out if those things interest you: https://blog.lapyst.dev/posts/14-how-to-create-a-completly-independent-bluesky-atproto-account

How to create a completly independent Bluesky/Atproto Account - Mai Lapyst's Blog

While #npm and some other central services have #outages I wonder if there is some is some #decentral or #federated solution for this? Otherwise #Javascript world is pretty fucked up if #Github / #Microsoft pulls the plug https://status.npmjs.org/

Yesterday we were still making fun of Bluesky. The “decentralized” service’s control center is already down. So, someone is lying here. Either the prefix De- before central means something completely different from what hundreds of generations have assumed. Or the tech bros around Steve Bannon and Bluesky are lying? I don’t know. #bluessky #decentral #liar #central #activitypub #eu

It turns out that decentralized social networks can go down, too. On Thursday evening, the decentralized social network Bluesky experienced a significant

Nip it in the bud. The reactionary dismantling of the federated Internet.

There is a huge outcry about the fact that a discussion forum was held at the CCC’s Chaos Congress to discuss the possibilities of centralizing and censoring the federated Internet. https://events.ccc.de/congress/2024/hub/de/event/fediverse-governance-fishbowl-diskussion/

Now, the #Chaos in Chaos Computer Club stands for chaos (get it?) and not for order and cleanliness. If I had wanted surveillance and law and order, I would have joined the CDU or become a cop. It is also impressive that the independent Internet is referred to as “radical anarchism” and that is obviously a bad thing. And now we don’t know exactly what a non-radical anarchism would look like? With a king? Or a police state?

And what I always ask myself in the face of such authoritarian outbursts is: who then makes the rules that we are supposed to follow? Usually it is the fantasies of omnipotence of those who demand it. But why should we follow them? Where does the authority to decide for others come from?

In “Radical Enlightenment A world of open sources” this question is also asked: Freedom, our greatest good? https://word.undeadnetwork.de/freiheit-unser-hochstes-gut

In this context, @tuxwise criticizes the discovery plan of the Mastodon project. Quite rightly, I must say. https://github.com/mastodon/fediverse_auxiliary_service_provider_specifications/issues/46

In summary, I think both #Mastodon and #CCC are great things that I have actively supported for many years. And that is why these reactionary, authoritarian tendencies must be strongly opposed! The FOSS community has been creating tools to do just that from the very beginning! NIP IT IN THE BUD!
