Apple Watch.

I have officially delisted my books from D2D, and sent them a formal complaint through their system (which is delightfully flooded by complaints; so much so that they have an big notice at the top of the contact form that they are absolutely drowning!).

Hopefully they will fix the "let's make the poorest pay" bullshit and maybe then I can put my books back up there. If not well...we still have only bad options. ):

Well… this is frustrating.

I’ve been publishing my writing through Amazon since around 2017/2018, and last year I decided to expand to other platforms. Draft2Digital seemed like a great, simple way to distribute my books more widely without a lot of extra hassle.

AI has made the landscape a lot messier for actual human creators. There’s been a surge of AI-generated books flooding the market, and now it looks like some companies are responding by introducing fees for independent authors just to get their work out there.

I’ll need to rethink how I’m distributing my writing, because this model doesn’t really work for me right now. Paying an annual fee if I don’t sell enough copies just doesn’t sit right, especially when books take up so little digital space.

While I figure out my next steps and continue working on future projects, feel free to check out and share my work. If you're new to my writing, I'm a genre blender leaning into a dark gothic feel while embracing urban fantasy, science fiction, and post-apocalyptic themes. Give these interesting nightmares a home. You can grab a book at:

If you’re not sure where to start, Making Contact is a shorter read and a great entry point involving an important recurring character in my works, while Shadowed Memories leads into the story I’m currently outlining.

There's been a lot of talk about D2D's recent choices in how they run their service - and yes, I am appalled by some of it myself.

Here's the thing: Bitching about them on Mastodon won't change anything.

But if you received their email, you can answer it, or send email to their support. Tell them - politely but firmly - what you think about their choices and why you feel what you feel about them.

I already did.

They earned themselves a shitstorm - in their inbox.

I used #Smashwords as my distribution platform for my ebooks. (I do not sell anything on Amazon.) #Draft2Digital merged with SW, and I should have known something like this would happen.

I don't sell a lot--I haven't marketed in years--and I can afford the fee. But this is a sign of worse to come. Should I just sell on my website? Or is there another similar service?

Draft2Digital is going to implement fees - Good e-Reader

Draft2Digital has announced new maintenance fees to combat the onslaught of low-quality AI books, along with a new activation fee.

Good e-Reader - The latest news on audiobooks, e-books, e-readers, tablets, and reviews.

I guess if Draft2Digital decides that I have to start paying to keep my books there, I will just delete them all from there.

I don't publish often, as the whole process is very difficult for my brain and I am just a single person doing 90% of the process myself from the writing, cover, editing, format (I do have a proofeditor, and my edits are manual and very extensive).

This will just push small indies like me to Amazon.
Especially disabled indies with little energy to spare.
