Unstaffed, automated shops probably do offer some convenience for the many rural villages where conventional shops are no longer viable - but surely a better solution is the épiceries participatives - community owned and run shops - that utilise volunteers to make them viable, but also often create some part-time jobs, opportunities for stagiaires - training placements - outlets for local producers, rather than standard supermarket products, and much more real community interaction.
There are hundreds of such community shops in France (and the UK and other countries), and available 'open source' guides to set them up.
