My favorite bit of #Cicada hilarity is still the #DuPageCountyForestPreserve's cicada-free explanation of the insect's life cycle.

My local #ForestPreserve people have gone #viral for their comedy here...
Even if you're bug-phobic, you can watch this one without worries. No actual #cicada images are used to illustrate this "Lifecycle of the 17-Year Cicada" (produced by my local #DuPage County Forest Preserve District). There is very good reason why this wacky video is going viral on other platforms, and even earned a shout-out from #StephenColbert.

@[email protected] @_L1vY_ None yet in #OKC. They usually show up in Late May, early June. We're set to get a 13-year brood this year, but I think we'll miss the overlap of the 17-yearers.
🧵 The slumbering #cicadas emerge when the average soil temperature is 64°F / 17.8°C. Average air temperatures in #Elmhurst #Illinois for this past week were:
55°F / 12.8°C Max
44.89°F / 7.16°C Avg
41°F / 5°C Min
In the past, the 17-year brood has usually emerged in late May or June.
So yes, this is early.

🧵Signs of the 17-year #cicadas are already showing up in #Elmhurst #Illinois. The city is a 25-min drive west of #Chicago and had overwhelming numbers of these cicadas in 2006 and 1989. This year, sections of the state will also be hit with a 13-year brood, an event that hasn't happened since 1803.
If you're wondering if you might be seeing them near you, this is what to look for in the soil.
