The God Who Is Near

As the Day Ends

“Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” — Galatians 4:7

As the day draws to a close, it is comforting to remember that God is not distant from His children. Through Christ, we have been brought into the family of God, no longer merely servants standing at a distance but sons and daughters welcomed into His presence. The universe itself bears witness to His sustaining power, yet this same Creator invites us into a personal relationship with Him. The God who holds the stars in place also knows our thoughts, hears our prayers, and watches over our lives.

The busyness of the day can make us feel disconnected from spiritual realities, but Scripture reminds us that God’s presence has never left us. He continually seeks to reveal Himself through His Word, through answered prayer, and through the quiet work of the Holy Spirit. As we rest tonight, we can trust that our Heavenly Father remains near. Faith, obedience, and love increase our awareness of His presence, allowing us to experience more fully the life He desires to share with us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for receiving me as Your child through Your grace and mercy. As this day ends, I reflect upon Your faithfulness that has carried me through every moment. Forgive my failures, calm my anxious thoughts, and help me rest securely in Your love. Thank You that I never face life alone because Your presence surrounds me continually. Strengthen my faith to trust You more deeply tomorrow than I did today, and teach me to recognize Your hand at work in both ordinary and extraordinary moments.

Jesus the Son, thank You for making my adoption into God’s family possible through Your sacrifice on the cross. Because of You, I am an heir of God’s promises and a recipient of His grace. Tonight I place my burdens, concerns, and unanswered questions into Your capable hands. Continue shaping my heart to reflect Your character. Help me follow Your example of humility, obedience, and love, and remind me that Your presence remains with me even when circumstances seem uncertain.

Holy Spirit, thank You for dwelling within me and guiding me into truth. Increase my spiritual receptivity so I may hear Your gentle leading more clearly. Renew my mind, deepen my love for God, and cultivate within me a greater desire for holiness. As I sleep tonight, fill my heart with peace and prepare me to walk faithfully tomorrow. Keep me attentive to Your guidance and willing to respond with trust and obedience.

Thought for the Evening

Before you rest tonight, take a quiet moment to thank God for one evidence of His presence you experienced today. Gratitude often opens our eyes to how near He has been all along.

Quote of the day, 28 October: Jessica Powers

The saints and mystics
had a name
for that deep
inwardness of flame,
the height or depth
or ground or goal
Which is God’s dwelling
in the soul.

Not capax Dei
do you say;
nor yet
scintilla animae
nor synderesis
all are fair—
but heaven,
because God is there.

All day and when
you wake at night
think of that place
of living light,
yours and within you
and aglow
where only God
and you can go.

None can assail you
in that place
save your own evil,
routing grace.
Not even angels
see or hear,
nor the dark spirits
prowling near.

But there are days
when watching eyes
could guess that you
hold Paradise.
Sometimes the shining
overflows
and everyone
around you knows.

Richard Rogers, English Puritan, writes on Christian duty. We manifest Christ’s love to neighbor by pitying their miseries, as Christ did. The neighbor’s greater calamity should speed our aid make us ease their pain as much as is possible in us.

Today, the greater the calamity, we’re told, the greater the need to wash hands, not to reinforce bad choices, and to wall the sufferer off from us.

How can you manifest Christ’s love?

We often chase status and worth, forgetting the beauty in being small. This reflection, originally written in October 2022, is a gentle reminder that our true identity is not found in applause or achievements, but in Christ alone. I invite you to read and rest in the truth of being significantly insignificant—deeply loved, held, and chosen.
