In 2006, when Google Videos was trying to beat out YouTube, I went viral. For whatever reason, a video of me improvising a chicken dance in my underwear became part of the zeitgeist.

I chose to share my video on Google Videos. This ended up being a mistake. After my very silly performance had ranked a few million views or so, Google pulled it for obscenity. Until then, it was one of the top-viewed videos, beating out Paris Hilton’s first music video and the death video of Steve Irwin (I still miss him so much!). When I appealed the decision, Google reinstated my video, but at a completely different URL. It never again regained its notoriety, which is just as well, I suppose. I was getting all sorts of hate mail and creepy commentary.

My favourite negative commentary came from a couple of university students in the US. They used my video as part of a project demonstrating the problems of alcoholism in sororities. They gave the presentation to their class, and once they got to the video of me dancing, the prof couldn’t help but laugh. He was a personal friend of mine and knew that I was neither an alcoholic nor part of a sorority. I don’t know if the students flunked or not.
