When the braggart Capitano Testosteroné is saved from a storm ravaged shipwreck at sea by a mysterious woman in the waves, a craze of fantastical wonder washes ashore in "The Mermaids of Venice", a farce that combines traditional Renaissance comedy with historic folklore! But would we be allowed to get a stage at Pennsic that wet?

Another play we are almost definitely encoring is "Arlecchino, Emperor on the Moon", a project of several years that first "launched" this past spring at Ohio State University for an astronomy themed medieval conference. But maybe the stars will be right again this summer at Pennsic 2026!

Le vicende raccontate sono ispirate da una storia vera: nel 1984, durante lo sciopero dei minatori britannici contro la decisione del governo di Margaret Thatcher di chiudere venti siti estrattivi, con la conseguente perdita di migliaia di posti di lavoro, l’attivista per i diritti gay Mark Ashton pensò di raccogliere fondi per supportare la protesta, formando l’LGSM, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners.

Trama

Nonostante l’imbarazzo e lo scetticismo iniziale del sindacato ufficiale, il gruppo di attivisti si reca di persona a Onllwyn, un piccolo villaggio minerario nel Galles, per consegnare le donazioni. Superando le diffidenze culturali e la chiusura di parte della comunità locale, tra i minatori e il gruppo londinese si instaura un forte legame di amicizia e solidarietà, culminato nella storica partecipazione degli operai al corteo del Gay Pride dell’anno successivo a Londra.
