PermaSolarPotterI bought two #chayote to plant and one to eat because I’ve never had them before. Cutting it in half, you can see the large seed which is soft and easy to slice through. I pan fried them with garlic powder salt & pepper until each side was lightly browned. It’s got a nice crisp texture and a very mild but slightly sweet flavor. I can see this being very versatile. In #Louisiana, they stuff the halves with shrimp and sausage.
Continuing on my journey with perennial food plants, I decided to try #chayote, a squash-like fruit related to the gourd family. I used to live in Louisiana, where they’re called mirlitons and Jamaicans call them chocho.
To propagate, a new plant simply sprouts from the old fruit, which I got from the grocery store. Since they are susceptible to rot, you shouldn’t bury the fruit completely in soil. Let’s see how it goes. #zone10 #Florida @gardening
