Bigger is not necessarily better IMO when it comes to Chinese food.

In fact, in my experiences, there's generally a inverse relationship between the quality of the food & service as relates to the size of the restaurant, whether it serves Chinese food or not.

Don't think I'll ever go to eat at the newly opened HL Peninsula Restaurant in Castro Valley for this reason.

Early reviews on Google maps & Yelp seem to indicate that they are having a rough start & that it will take some time for them to get up to speed.

So, if you're interested, I wouldn't even consider dropping by for a least 6 months to a a year to give it a try, if they last that long. We'll see . . .

Made Mom some stuffed #BitterMelon #soup for her breakfast. She's having it with some diabetic friendly rice. Mom needs to regain lost weight. We still don't have any clear diagnosis on why she's still experiencing on/off abdominal pains. I can't speak to her endocrinologist until October 28th. Her GP isn't sure what's happening. No answers = increased stress/anxiety. I'm really worried about Mom.
I'm returning to death doula work on a PT basis next Wednesday. I'm hoping Mom's doing much better by November so I can get back to FT.
Right now, Mom still needs extra help & I'm drowning in household bills.
I got 1 donation yesterday & we used it to buy Mom's vitamin supplements & a heating pad.

Last week I made J. Kenji Lopez-Alt’s Springfield-Style Cashew Chicken from his The Wok cookbook.

This fried chicken dish is different from the General Tso’s-based previous ones, and was disappointingly better without the sauce. 2 stars ★★☆☆☆

Yunnan at South of the Clouds in Jersey City. Bright, clean, efficient.

Steamed pot chicken was fantastic. My late obsession is a good chicken broth — not easy to make, not easy to find. This one was good.

Fantastic Yunnan style pork ribs with mint and great crispy lotus fries.

Honestly, we were here to cross the bridge but somehow that was underwhelming: both, broth and fixings — the entire bowl felt bare and bland with everything already mixed in. I need to read upon this classic and try it myself at home and somewhere in Flushing.

A note on the ordering process. No paper menu — QR code instead. I get it. You punch the order into your phone. Really? Ok. Human interaction can be helpful. But ok. To complete the order, you’re required to enter your phone number. What? Why? The chef’s going to call and ask about food allergies, right?

We stopped here, waved our server, and he reluctantly entered our order into his hand held device. Without our phone number.

We kind of felt old and grumpy but in a few minutes a younger group settled at the table next to us. Not only they refused to give their phone numbers, they also requested a paper menu. We relaxed. But then, they asked for forks.🥴🫣😆
