Spineless News Channels
@ariadne oh lilo. He and I used to bicker so pointlessly on and about #linpeople and the double ##channelname stuff... RIP to him 8)
Note to self: to get OP status on one's IRC channel, it's "/msg ChanServ OP #channelname [nickname]"

@arh

#channelname:libera.chat

Want to join a #matrix channel, but prefer to stay comfortable within your #xmpp account? Turns out matrix.org runs a XMPP gateway - so you can just join a MUC using the `#channelname#[email protected]` JID!

@pcastela To join a matrix chat on xmpp its

#channelname#homeserver@homeserver

@brad Kicking / banning permissions aren't really what I'm talking about, since everything already has those. I'm talking a bit more about permissions regarding who can view, join, modify, delete, categorize, rename, etc channels and community settings. In communities with 800 people, it may be helpful to have an admin chat. In business communications, you may only want members of the Sales group to join the Sales chat.

I'd probably agree that it'd be easier to simplify moderation and minimize it, but that should really be up to the individual community to curate that culture. Everyone's got different needs and some of them are even pretty valid.

I think with Freenode you need to be registered for 3 months before you can claim any channel, dunno about Rizon though. For users just wanting their own space to shitpost with their friends, that's going to drive them out instantly. Since anyone can register a #channelname-whatever channel, there's no guarantee that someone else can't troll your group by claiming that anyway.
@wizard What is with this privilege obsession? I think if you're focusing this much on moderation you're going to create a bad environment. It shouldn't be the norm to kick/ban people.
>Unless you own an IRC server, it's also probably not a simple process to go and make your own channel in it either.
I believe on both Freenode and Rizon you can just /join a channel with a name not yet taken and then you own it. then you can register with chanserv for permanence and go from there.
For multiple channels related to one topic it's common to see #channelname-offtopic and similar. Often other related channels are mentioned in the topic as well.

@pounce yeah, it's been frustrating: really I just want a little engine that will sit in its own process and tick over things like PINGs, exposing an interface where i can message {privmsg, "#channelname", "message goes here"}, and then get similar messages back on channel events.

Most want to be bot frameworks where you register all your behaviors as callbacks and build your stuff very tightly coupled in.

@KitsuneAlicia
As I like to say when moderating IRC channels:

It is your freedom of speech to say what you want, just like it's my freedom of speech to say to the server "/kick #channelname username You are annoying me please stop"
