My flight was a success. Beautiful winter day to fly. It was actually above freezing and the air was smooth. I had to take the winter kit off the plane and this skyhawk has it mounted on the bottom of the cowl so it took me a little laying on the floor with a screwdriver to get it off. But it says remove when over 20F and it was 38F so I removed it.
On the way down I enjoyed the sights (and the cabin heat). The lakes are all in various stages of freezing over and snow blankets everything. Uneventful and smooth trip down to Janesville. I did an airborne VOR dual check since our GPS is getting too much interference from the radio and is now placarded as no IFR.
For my return trip I decided to follow the VORs to MSN -> OSH to brush up on my VOR navigation and it was a good thing I did. I ended up having the outbound radial selected on my OBS while flying towards the VOR. I forgot that makes it REVERSE sensing. So I was trying to correct and getting further off. Eventually I remembered and flew it reversed.
On my way back I did a landing at 79C for practice. I had to go around due to birds mid-runway and turkeys at the end. Second landing was good. After that I had to make the long 6 mile flight back to KATW.
It was a great day to fly, I'm super happy I went. (Although I was informed my second radio is nearly unreadable now after landing. So looks like we should get that new radio sooner rather than later)
