A scenic stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in northern California. My budget rental car just below. Morning fog still burning off over the Pacific and the immediate seacoast. March 1984.

Who are green lanes for? My thoughts on the issue of access to Byways Open to All Traffic.

ā€œI’m no fan of 4x4s and in many ways a ban would suit me just fine. Yet the idea of cyclists campaigning to deny other people their legal right to access the countryside really troubles me.ā€

Who are green lanes for?

Off-roaders have a legal right to drive on Byways Open to All Traffic. So ill-feeling towards them is a symptom of a wider problem.

Hollow ways, carved by the soles of thousands of feet and hooves over generations, are not common in the #English #Midlands. So to find and #walk two in a day, each with their own delightfully distinct character, was just a joy. #SlowWays #Byways #Nottinghamshire #Trees #Hedgerows #Spring #LandscapeHistory

Looking back on a family holiday spent riding bikes along Wiltshire byways: https://mattpedals.bike/a-week-of-wiltshire-byways. Where else could you take in the world's largest stone circle, a curly whirly brutalist bridge, neolithic long barrow complete with Saxon legend, and a Bronze Age white horse? Plus a great railway path to pop into town. This is why it's one of my favourite parts of the country to ride in.

A week of Wiltshire byways

It was a late August morning, the first of our holiday, and we were keen to get going. We retrieved our bikes from the cottage porch an...

After listening to the incessant rain last night, I almost had 2nd thoughts about pioneering the #SlowWays route from #Buckfastleigh to #Ipplepen today - expecting #Devon #byways & #bridleways flowing like rivers or boot-deep in mud. A bit of both, but surprisingly passable. A flooded meadow proved more tricky. The original route, Bucipp 1 fails due to an access issue (lack of!), but I’d an alternative up my sleeve - Bucipp 2 gets 4āļø imo.
#Cake from Broadhempston community shop helped greatly!
Another ancient #Holloway. The banks were lovely and mossy, and dripping with water. The sound was so soothing. It would have made a lovely field recording but there was too much noise carrying from a nearby building site. A particularly special route for me as I was responsible for adding it to the definitive map of public rights of way 😊 #Devon #Byways #Mosstodon #SlowWays #lichen
Reviewed a route from Lapford to Crediton as part of the #SlowWays network. A damp start, which turned into a lovely afternoon. Walking ancient (albeit a bit wet and muddy) #byways and #bridleways through the beautiful, peaceful mid #devon countryside. Reached Crediton just as the sun went down, tired and muddy (and with squelchy boots), but happy.
