Will a national weed listing help control buffel grass?

Traditional owners and scientists want buffel grass recognised as a Weed of National Significance, but the cattle industry opposes the move because it relies on the species for fodder.

@adriantomlinson.bsky.social Here's the graphic + info re: MLA and their lobbying power c/o @[email protected]. Let's call it done at 13/13! Phew! Thanks for playing! #Buffelgrass #colonialism #Australia #Agriculture
@adriantomlinson.bsky.social might you know what they're spraying with? Obviously with #buffelgrass, it's something hardcore. I'm guessing it's roundup aka #glyphosate. I have *issues* with glyphosate ⬇️ 8/

@adriantomlinson.bsky.social not to be outdone, lets just go through this pack of lobbyists in the ALT tags. Basically what we're looking here is the octopus tentacles of Meat & Livestock Australia, which they all roll into to do the same kind of right wing lobbying. 5/ #BuffelGrass #Australia
Shall we play the game @[email protected] of how many top global land holding billionaire lobbyists are featured in the ABC's "authoritative coverage"? #buffelgrass #Australia #colonialism #agriculture

🌿🌧️ Predicting the extent of invasive Buffelgrass is important for its management. Travis Matlock, a runner-up in the @uazlibraries 2024 #DataVisualization Challenge, in collaboration with the USA NPN, created an informative map that tracks rainfall "events" over a 30-day period to forecast buffelgrass green-up 1–2 weeks in advance. Buffelgrass Forecast Shiny App

This map was created by Travis Matlock as a product of USA National Phenology Network. It is a Raster plus Spatial Point map of Arizona that calculates the number of distinct precipiation "events" over a 30-day rolling period prior to the forecast date. The number of these events, in turn, is used to forecast areas where buffelgrass will be "greening up" in the following 1-2 weeks.A rainfall event is counted as any calendar day with precipitation over 0.25 in. In order to distinguish separate events, a "buffer" of three days with little or no rainfall must occur following an event in order for the next day with rainfall over 0.25 in to be counted as a new event. The first day of the buffer must witness 0" of precipitation. This sequence is calculated separately for each Raster cell and for each Spatial Point to determine its event value.Raster data is obtained from the PRISM climate group at Oregon State University. Spatial point data represents individual precipitation gauges and is obtained from both RainLog and NOAA's RCC-ACIS precipitation data (labels are given by clicking on points in the interactive map). This iteration of this map was entered into the 2024 UA Libraries Data Visualization Challenge. For inquiries regarding the contents of this dataset, please contact the Corresponding Author listed in the README.txt file.
