@GhostOnTheHalfShell
I found this para an interesting summary… albeit usual depressing ending
(the rest of the article is about American billionaires’ “giving pledges” - now out of fashion, apparently):
“Wealth last concentrated at such levels during the original Gilded Age, the 1890s through the early 1900s, and the correction didn’t come from philanthropists. It came from trust-busting, the federal income tax, the estate tax, and eventually the New Deal. It arrived as policy that was driven by political pressure too powerful to be ignored. The institutions that forced that correction — a functional Congress, a free press, an empowered regulatory state — look considerably different today.”

Absolutely disgusting. 😤 Your blood will boil if you read this article; stories of humble people not asking for much, being penalsed & traumatised by auto-algo-AI-slop-stupid & weasel words about ‘fine-tuning’ the system: "It's quite inhumane” is the least of it.🤬
New Minister Sam Rae does not cover himself in glory either - pathetic response. 😤
Hard to believe this is happening so recently after Robodebt & that the public service bureaucracy & the federal govt & indeed other govts have learned so little! Perhaps it’s because no one was adequately punished for Robodebt? ‘AI says No’ has become the excuse of the day. 😤

Yes, well said! How long do we have to wait for answers? 🤔 “Who is accountable in the end?” - re Ai-LLM-based “tools” “hallucinating” - much to C-suite surprise; C-suite having already used them to inform Boards, make decisions, etc etc. ☹️

So true… ☹️ I was going to say something glib like ‘another one bites the dust’ but there’ve been so few… & then there’s Starmer puckering up fearfully at his sorry press conference - if only he’d known then what he knows now! [irony]
It’s the lack of consequences that’s most appalling. ☹️

A lovely read, beautifully written, reminding us that “the European Web… conquered the world because it was offered as a common good instead of seeking short-term profits.” 🙂
Redefining ‘success’ as contributing to the commons (copyleft) as opposed to privatising:
“Some are proud because they made a lot of money while cutting down a forest. Others are proud because they are planting trees that will produce the oxygen breathed by their grandchildren. What if success was not privatizing resources but instead contributing to the commons, to make it each day better, richer, stronger?

“The choice is ours. We simply need to choose whom we admire. Whom we want to recognize as successful. Whom we aspire to be when we grow up. We need to sing the praises of our true heroes: those who contribute to our commons.”
🙏🏻 so much, for writing this, for sharing it 😁

Sometimes it feels as if every business in the US is corrupt and every ‘representative’ can be bought by the corrupt. 🙀 Surely it can’t be so? 🤔 But then I look at 47… just modelling rottenness the whole livelong day. ☹️

Spain gets it - but their government also *explains* it. 🙂 Faced with an ageing demographic, which means a shrinking working age population, Spain can choose to be closed & poor or to open up and be better off overall. So they’re taking practical steps to better integrate migrants they already have, legally into economic as well as broader society.
🗣️ A lot is said about how previous waves of immigrants want to keep newer waves out (a truism unlikely to be universal in my view*) but isn’t it up to leaders to explain why new people coming into our countries is a good thing & the many steps we can & will take to make it work or to make it work better? 🤔

* Do the children of immigrants feel the same as their parents? Do attitudes vary with education level? Etc. 🤔

Nice to have such a good crisp summary! Many 🙏🏻 to you & the Grattan Institute. 😁

Gas is interesting: “Gas power generation at its lowest point since 2000. If, as the gas ads tell you, gas is needed to firm renewables, why is gas going down while renewables go up?” Good question!! 🤔

The Qld situation makes their recent actions in favour of fossil fuels (& actively against renewables) look like shutting the stable door after the horse has… All they’re doing is penalising their population. Strange behaviour. 🤔
