Emotionally Fragile:

"I have weathered wind and rain; on those dull days I was radiant. Drought and despair come and I retreat inward, surrounding myself with my desiccated hopes. Surely the wind will strip me of them, too."

๐ŸŽบLAWN CARE FIELD DAY COMING UP๐ŸŽบ

This is a fun, useful event for anyone wanting a kempt yard.

I get inevitable pushback from people who think we should be growing corn and beans instead of lawns.

But many of us are simply growing weeds, plants we don't like.

And it doesn't discourage anyone from sowing prairie plants as so many in Minneapolis have done, with beautiful results.

But that takes work! Neglect looks like hell.

Topics for this year's field day include:

โ€ข When is a lawn salvageable?
โ€ข Selecting species and cultivars that require fewer inputs
โ€ข How to manage the most difficult weeds
โ€ข Using dormant seeding to establish or improve a lawn
โ€ข Efficient lawn watering
โ€ข How to manage lawns with shade

In California, an invasive mustard is destabilizing desert plant communities

In southern Californiaโ€™s Coachella Valley, pale sand dunes sprawl under the desert sun, shifting and re-forming in the wind. In dry years, lone shrubs dot the dunes. But the landscape bursts with color and greenery after a wet winter. Thatโ€™s because seeds of desert plants may wait in the soil for years, even decades, for [โ€ฆ]

Mongabay Environmental News

@dubh When it's done right, people can make a huge difference to NZ's environment by spotting emergent weeds as they're beginning to establish.

My favourite recent example is Dave Holland's discovery in 2020 of wild black swallow-wort on the edge of the Timaru Botanic Gardens. That was the first wild record of the species anywhere in NZ, and it's a wetland weed overseas. Timaru Council and Environment Canterbury staff stepped in with control, over several years, and now it's gone.

That's one environmental weed nipped in the bud before it could get started.

iNaturalist NZ

Today I was teaching a lecture about environmental weeds, for our Applied Ecology and Conservation course at #LincolnUniversityNZ. I showed the class the "Environmental weeds in New Zealand" project on #iNaturalist. That was made by staff at the #DepartmentofConservation to gather observations of DOC's 386 weed species.

These are the plants that DOC has assessed as being fully naturalised wild exotics, already present in natural ecosystems, and likely to be having more than minor impacts on NZ ecosystems. iNat currently has 199,588 observations of 379 of these species.

On a whim, in class I decided to see how many of these environmental weeds were present on the university campus.

Was it 10? Maybe 20?

No, 109 species.

Like a lot of urban and rural areas in NZ, our campus is a reservoir of weeds.

The vegie garden is pretty under used this cold season, because I couldn't plant or weed well earlier this year (or again now) due to carpal tunnel and other nerve issues.

But I'm still getting a bit out of it.

Today's harvest is mostly edible weeds.

Mallow root and nettle, which I'm going to turn into a pasta sauce.

A handful of peas and snow peas, some spring onions, and a chilli. And a couple of jonquils because I love the scent.

Later this week I'll be getting some rainbow chard and cabbage too, but I don't need them rotting in the fridge until I'm ready to use them.

There are still tens of chillies on the bushes. I've dried about a hundred, but I'm "storing" the rest on the bush to keep them fresh.
