AEMO is concerned about system strength. It does not yet agree with battery technology providers that grid forming inverters can provide all the system strength services traditionally provides by coal and gas, and synchronous condensers are hard to obtain, and expensive to boot.

if... IF... we do happen to solve this real problem:

the lack of replacement wind and solar capacity

then what are the engineering problems needing to be overcome, to adapt at least some of the large steam turbine generators as defacto synchronous condensers?

in principle at least, generators & motors are just the same in reverse, so, pending adequate upstream green electricity, supply it to these generators so that they become motors that drive the coupled steam turbines. use the existing lube & seal systems, but no boilers are needed, hence none of the coal processing & usage is required [all that can indeed then be scrapped]. take advantage of the huge rotating masses to provide the important frequency stability to the network, which for all these decades they've been doing in their historical role... just now do it "in reverse", as defacto synchronous condensers.

ofc there will be engineering matters to be observed, but even so, as a stop gap til straya finally has full green energy, why is nobody publicly canvassing this possibility?

Australia's biggest coal generator may be phased out, unit by unit, rather than a hard exit

Origin says a phased closure of the country's biggest coal generator is a "reasonable" assumption. "It's not straightforward," says CEO Frank Calabria.

Winter Guide for songbirds and other wildlife

As things wind down after the warmth of summer and the days get shorter, we need to think about how best to prepare our gardens for winter. From Feeding To Shelter and Water.

My mentees this year in the Urban DNA Barcoding Research Program. They'll be continuing our work on bird diversity at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY, which we've been doing for the past three years. They were doing the field component of their study, collecting feathers for DNA extraction and sequencing. #DNAbarcoding #birds #biodiversity #saltmarsh #ecology #climatechange
San Diego Zoo Welcomes Rare Fossa Triplets | Africanews

With an estimated 2,500 fossas left in the wild, they are classified as vulnerable. Conservationists hope that successful births like this one will help raise awareness and support for safeguarding Madagascar’s unique wildlife.

Gullible rich people doing conspicuously destructive things to impress their rich friends because they can? See? Madagascar isn't so exotic after all.

Lemurs are being eaten as an urban delicacy in Madagascar

Founder’s Briefs: An occasional series where Mongabay founder Rhett Ayers Butler shares analysis, perspectives and story summaries. In Madagascar’s cities, a quiet but lucrative market is reshaping the future of one of the world’s most imperiled groups of animals. Lemurs—already the most threatened mammals on the planet—are being sold as a kind of urban delicacy, […]

A very obvious take away:
the importance of leaving #hedgerows and #nature be.
Stop tidying nature.
Stop decimating hedgerows.
Wild creatures need wild spaces all year round.
Nature provides.
If we allow her.
Simple!

Black-hooded sun orchid (Thelymitra atronitida) near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC. This uncommon species tends to be very shy to flower - usually only see one or two flowers open briefly on warm/humid mornings. A nice patch of plants at this location but only one flower open - and this closed up as I photographed it just before noon.
