"The changes we report suggest that the Arctic Ocean ecosystem passed a tipping point around 2009. How this change cascades through the food chain needs to be closely monitored as this has profound implications for us, including on commercial fishing in the North Atlantic Ocean." #ClimateCrisis #TippingPoints

Arctic Ocean food chain is disrupted as a key tipping point has now been passed

An irreversible shift in the chemical makeup of the Arctic Ocean driven by climate change is disrupting the region's food chain, a study suggests. Widespread loss of Arctic sea ice has led to a sharp fall in levels of a key nutrient, affecting populations of plankton, fish, seabirds and marine mammals, say researchers. Their analysis reveals that exposure to sunlight of vast shallow regions of the ocean previously covered by ice fuels a process that breaks down the nutrient—nitrate—and removes it from seawater. The study appears in Communications Earth & Environment.

Our flagship climate policy is safeguarding fossil fuels, not the climate

The Safeguard Mechanism was designed to hold Australia's 200-plus largest industrial polluters to account. But as Australia Institute analysis demonstrates, instead of driving genuine emissions reductions, the Mechanism has become something closer to a very lucrative permission slip for fossil fuels to keep polluting and expanding.

Critique of Media Coverage and Climate Tipping Point Risks in a Warming World

The article argues that mainstream media is failing to adequately report the escalating climate crisis, allowing political and economic systems driven by corporate interests to continue largely unchallenged. It highlights how urgent scientific warnings about climate change are often underrepresented in news coverage, while political drama and short-term events dominate public discourse. A central example is the 100th birthday celebration of naturalist David Attenborough, where climate change—despite being a major focus of his recent work—was largely absent from the public narrative of the event. The article uses this to illustrate how even widely respected environmental voices are often depoliticized or sanitized in mainstream media contexts. The piece reviews recent scientific findings warning that Earth may be approaching critical climate tipping points. These include potential collapse of major systems such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), accelerated melting of polar ice sheets, and dieback of the Amazon rainforest. Some studies suggest a significant risk—possibly as high as 50%—of AMOC destabilization by 2100, which could severely disrupt global weather patterns and agriculture, particularly in Europe and the Northern Hemisphere. It also discusses projections that current warming trends, already exceeding 1.3°C above pre-industrial levels, could lead to 2–3°C or higher warming under current policies, with worst-case scenarios reaching much higher temperatures if feedback loops are triggered. Such outcomes could result in widespread ecological collapse, food insecurity, and severe societal disruption. Ultimately, the article criticizes what it sees as a systemic failure of journalism to prioritize sustained, in-depth climate reporting, arguing that this lack of attention contributes to a dangerous disconnect between scientific warnings and public awareness.

We interrupted our “Minister for Civil Protection”, #MartinPfister, during the #UBS Economic Forum at the Kongresshaus in #Zurich.

Martin Pfister and his Federal Council pose a threat to our country’s #security. His assessment of the threat, like himself, is stuck in the last millennium. He fears unrealistic #airstrikes from Russia or Iran more than he does #climatechange, which is infinitely more dangerous and already claims hundreds of #civilianlives in #Switzerland every year. Like the entire government, he notoriously and fundamentally underestimates the threat of #globalwarming and species loss to future generations. He would rather invest 3.4 billion Swiss francs in #fighter-bombers and air defence systems, thereby squandering funds that are so urgently needed elsewhere to protect our #future. Worse still, the focus on non-existent threats is a perfidious diversionary tactic. It distracts from the fact that Switzerland is spectacularly failing to meet its #climatetargets, that the world is spectacularly failing to meet its climate targets, that greenhouse gas emissions and temperatures are skyrocketing, that #tippingpoints are being reached – and all this despite the fact that it could all still be prevented if it were seriously put on the agenda.

The links between our fossil-fuel-dependent way of life and #globalwars are more than obvious. They are two sides of the same coin. In a world of growing resource scarcity, anyone who relies on fossil fuels and functioning transport routes for their own survival needs ever-expanding wars to secure essential supplies. This is the madness and the spiral logic of the military-industrial complex. Martin Pfister would have the power to abandon the path of rearmament, destruction and global warming in favour of a peaceful, non-imperial and non-fossil-based economic order. As long as he does not use this power, he is a threat to our security and a climate criminal.
