The NYT opinion writer sets the mood of her article writing that the students' dancing to hip-hop showcases gymnastics instead of looser routines made for the club. She probably never noticed East Asian content: the twitchy hiphop moves are what you see in Korean/Chinese music videos. Also loose routines are not made for the club, but invented in it. Clip choreography is made for videos.

Watched the #bamarush doc on HBO. I didn’t like it- I thought going in that we would get to see the subjects rush but instead we got zero rush, and WAY too many insipid self-inserts by the director that ate up time that could have been spent on, I dunno, exploring the systematic sexual assault and racism that only got about 30 seconds of screen time. It wasn’t a fun rush doc because there was no rush, and it wasn’t a serious rush doc because no time was spent on the serious topics. Thumbs down.

Even without the perspective of the director's (#RachelFleit) story shared here, there's a deep sadness and real pain evident throughout, especially in Makalya and Isabelle.
The desperate need to belong I've always associated with "#Greek" life, for both women and men, is evident in everyone depicted in this.
#Patriarchy drives this mostly harmful system.
I'm reminded of my role in it, and amends I must continue to live.

It reminded me of that documentary about the hot yoga guru who turned out to be a rapist. Red flags everywhere yet these girls seem unable to see them.
That said, I felt like they only scratched the surface. There was more to the story and they didn't quite explore that.

Greek life was the main thing going at the small liberal arts college I attended. (I can't imagine it at a huge campus like UA.) I'm so glad my son went to a school where that wasn't all there was to the social life. So many students were independent. It was a relief to me that he didn't rush or pledge.
