The article reports that people with borderline personality disorder who hear voices show structural differences in brain regions tied to language, sensory integration, and emotional regulation, suggesting shared and distinct neural mechanisms across conditions.

This topic is of interest to psychology readers because it highlights how perceptual experiences can arise from distributed brain networks and how neuroanatomical variations relate to symptom profiles, informing ongoing discussions about diagnosis, cognition, and emotion processing.

Neural research summarized here suggests that auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia may arise when inner speech is mispredicted, causing brain activity to rise as if voices are external. For therapists, psychotherapists, social workers, and other mental health professionals, this neural framing aids understanding of clients’ reports of hearing voices and highlights the potential for early psychosis risk indicators.

Exploding head syndrome (EHS) is an #abnormalSensoryPerceptionDuringSleep in which a person experiences #auditoryHallucinations that are loud and of short duration when falling #asleep or #wakingUp. The noise may be frightening, typically occurs only occasionally, and is not a serious health concern. People may also experience a flash of light. Pain is typically absent. The cause is unknown. Potential organic explanations that have been investigated but ruled out include ear problems.

Someone was asking about auditory hallucinations recently... they are not very frequent for me, but I had one last night when I was half asleep.

I don't remember what the noise was exactly, but for some strange reason my brain decided to place it outside my body.

I can't explain it.

I do have hypnopompic and hypnagogic hallucinations from time to time, but usually they are clearly screams, trumpets, or cymbals crashing. (Super fun!!!)

This wasn't like that.

Boosting this survey for more responses. I'm super interested since reading Musicophilia by #OliverSacks and realizing not everyone "hears" or can replay a piece of music in their head, either spontaneously or on command, and that at least some versions of this could be classified as #AuditoryHallucinations. It's always mind-blowing to find out that what I assume to be a "normal" experience isn't.
