The source of the sub-surface rings is revealed! Apparently the water doesn't rise evenly, but sometimes "erupts" with extra force, sending out a ring of turbulence that looks like a dust storm viewed from high above -- or a pyroclastic flow. This ring made it nearly to the edge of the pond, but you can see the remains of smaller ones on the pond floor that didn't go quite as far.

The outermost destination of our hike was Union Spring, a crystal clear pool with a sandy bottom that had a couple of bubbling upwellings at the bottom, surrounded by faint rings several meters across.
