Evil Genius Chronicles Podcast for January 30 2026 - Fumble Fingered YutzDownload audio

On this show, I play a song from Doctor Deathray; as I was upgrading the capacity of my Synology NAS I discovered I didn't need it; don't enable the trash can on your Time Machine drives on a NAS; I am using my extra capacity to self-host Mastodon; running a one person Mastodon instance is easier than I predicted; I love NTFY for notifications; I hate Apprise for notifications; I bought a Trezor hardware wallet to hold all my weird pockets of crypto; the UX of using crypto for anything sucks; Obsidian starts slow on my Android phone; Quick Draft for Obsidian solves a big problem for me.

#selfhosting

Discovered #Apprise and then #Mailrise recently. Brilliant pieces of software and just what I needed for my homelab/cloud servers - SMTP to notification gateway locked down to whitelisted destinations.

Then I discovered that while Apprise is actively maintained, Mailrise is not. And there are a whole bunch of knowns bugs in it.

Spent some time forking Mailrise, updating its Apprise dependency and even updating its Python support.

What is everyone using for #Docker management or notifications? i.e.: I’m using #Portainer but hoping to find something to give me updates if a container crashes or has a status change, preferably #ntfy . Any other recommendations from Portainer or notifications? Something through #Apprise ?

It’s «Question Monday».

Is there anybody around running Apprise-API on a FreeBSD host? (ie. using a manual install of some sort, not a Docker-thingy)

To me it's really weird that #Proxmox 8.1 implements #gotify as alternative notification module.
First: It's Android only, which is a good reason not to choose it in the first place.
Secondly: We have enough messaging apps already on our phones.
The best choice in my opinion would have been #apprise
but that's only me.

Just made a #blog #post about #homeassistant so you can trigger #notifications using #apprise or #ntfy every time a #automation runs. Check it out and please give me feedback if you have any!

Dealing With Being Distrusting of HomeAssistant Automations

HomeAssistant is something I'm sure everyone is aware of - an open source tool for managing your smart home devices. I have used it for a number of years, starting with a rough and ready setup on a Raspberry Pi 3B. Back then, I only had three smart light bulbs

formally introducing: watchbird! 🦅

@watchbird is an #uptime #bot for instances around the fediverse. it will CAW when something's up, like when it can't connect to the instance main page. it's powered by #uptimekuma + #apprise + the #mastodon #api.

if you want your #instance added, just let me know here on mastodon @taco (reply or dm, whatever)! i'm constantly adding more servers that i find that i want to keep an eye on.

you can see the full page of monitored instances here: https://uptime.birdcat.cafe/status/fediverse

#Proxmox really needs a new notification backend. Only supporting #Email is not appropriate.
I think #Apprise is the best option as it supports so many different channels but they seem to not want external solutions. 🤨
