Somehow recently I was able to get notification badges for protonmail that was “add to home screen” bookmark on the #iPad so I could monitor a second account in addition to the app. For the life of me I can’t remember how I enabled this and wanted to do this on the #iPhone too…. Posting here as reminder to circle back but if anyone remembers how to achieve this again please share. #Notifications

I was told by someone that they missed one of my DM. I kinda assumed it was because of distraction, too many notifications, etc, but... today, wondering why someone hadn't replied to me, I checked my DM-only feed and... I had missed their DM!!!

Is there an issue with DM notifications with the current version of Mastodon?

Following an article published by @404mediaco today, there were many posts recommending to prevent #notifications in #Signal from revealing message content, by switching notification texts to "No name or message".

While here's how to do that:

…you might not be entirely happy about not knowing whether you've received a message from your significant other, or a family member.

If distinctive notification sounds work for you, and aren't too obnoxious, you can disable notification content, as described above; and still set specific notification sounds on a per-chat base:

This works for both one-on-one chats and for groups.

Oh, but it's even worse than that. From TFA:

Authorities have turned to push notifications more broadly as an investigative strategy too; in June 404 Media reported Apple gave governments data on thousands of push notifications. Those were legal demands made to Apple, while the Prairieland case was about data from a device authorities had physical access to.

This suggests that your #notifications are sent home to #Apple. Why is that necessary?

I have further questions:

Why, and for whose benefit, were notifications stored on the phone after the #Signal app had been removed? They were useless to the other of the phone.
How much of this vulnerability is shared with Android phones?
