@linkdrop @adventure_tense The Ansel project certainly intrigues me. Forking the darktable project is healthy for open source, and a good spirited debate, for different visions.

My only misgiving is how personally negative the Ansel developer is towards the developers at Darktable. Seems like it alienates the same community that is being targeted to support Ansel.

The arguments for Ansel seem more effective to me when explaining and executing to its vision.

I'm using darktable to retouch my photos. I like it despite its weaknesses.

About that project.
One particular person was a major contributor during the pandemic and did a lot for darktable features & codeline.
I was leaning a bit toward the author's opinion when he was active on darktable and trying to push/promote some of his initiatives (many of each were great, btw).
BUT ...

Anyone using #Ansel for Editing photos?

I find it strange that the po-file of the german translation looks (is) complete, but the app is not fully translated - like the menus for example.

/* might be true for other languages as well */

Aurélien Pierre has forked #Darktable to #Ansel and is rewriting a lot of code to reduce the unnecessary complexity. A recent effort was rewriting the import tool: https://ansel.photos/en/news/rewriting-import/
Rewriting the import tool

Ansel inherits from Darktable its database backbone: the non-destructive editing histories are saved per-picture into an SQLite database, along with metadata and other user-defined data. Making the database aware of new pictures is done through “importing” pictures from a disk or a memory card. That’s where the import tool comes. Unfortunately, the Darktable importer is another thing that was butchered circa 2020 and turned into something deeply disconcerning, as it is a file browser that resembles no previously-known file browser, and manages to lack basic features (like Ctrl+F or EXIF preview) while still being bloated with useless ones (see below).
