Although I'm heartened to see such strong opposition to the Treaty Principles bill, I wonder whether the bill's introduction is just the beginning of a long campaign by right wingers. I'm horribly reminded of the beginnings of the Brexit movement in the UK.

I also wonder if this bill is purely the product of the Act party, or if it has not been nourished by think tanks and donors on the North American right. Not only has "semi-aligned" New Zealand long been a thorn in the flesh of the US right, but the undermining of the Treaty of Waitangi might provide a model and incentive for the sabotage of treaties with indigenous peoples in North America.
