There are a lot of local #APRS traffic, but I still haven't figured out what these off-centre circles in #YAAC mean.

If you're on aprs.fi and looking at my #APRS position for #HamRadio reasons, please disregard this apparent movement.

The conversion of google maps' bajillion digits lat and lon to deg-mm-ss, as #YAAC understands it, is not so good.

So I had to poke at the numbers and hit "Save" a bunch of times to get it close to reality.

YAAC really should have a point-at-the-map move-STATION-to-here thing, 'cuz their Beacon settings tab is shit.

The monitor above my day-job screen is almost always on #HamClock, but when someone creates an #EOC object in #APRS in Petosky, #Michigan the #YAAC map pops to foreground. The word “EMERGENCY” in the beacon triggers. Cool!

As of today, my laptop is now 2/3 complete, I've put the windows portion (TAZOpticon) on and... Holy shit that's a lot of programs to install. At least like, #YAAC, #VarAC, and one other I'm probably forgetting will just immediately bind to the GPS COM port and get position updates, so that's cool.

I uh, get to reformat my backup target as exFAT though, I'm NOT using #WSL2 JUST to get local machine backups. I might use WSL2 to try OP25 though.... But yeah. I doubt Borg will like exFAT as its repository FS (no journaling), but it's compatible. (I'll explain the nuance of windows being broken, later)

Thoughts to consider.

I seem to be seeing more #ham radio operators using a #Mac. This is awesome and with some luck we'll see more software authors supporting the Mac (like the excellent #fldigi, #hamlib and #YAAC software). For anyone interested there has been a ham-mac mailing list for years where Hams could talk about mac related topics. See https://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/ham-mac

A quirk with #YAAC and #Direwolf. If I do any message or beacon interaction in the YAAC UI, Direwolf will throw errors about "...noone is listening." And it persists past finishing what I was doing in YAAC.

Stop both, restart both, continues to work fine.

Would be horrible if I was to interact with YAAC GUI frequently (like sending messages to stns). But I don't. Usually I just LOOK at it on occasion.

@M0CUV #xastir and #yaac is what I use from time to time for that

Update: BetterYAAC (as I'm calling it) now supports overlays on all map symbols (as per the APRS 1.2 spec and symbols-new.txt) instead of just the alternate table ones!

This includes the operator bit - using the "O" (oscar) overlay to indicate that an operator is present and available at that station.

Let me know if anyone else wants a copy, for now the code is private but I can easily flip that switch if enough folks want YAAC with a few hacked-on changes.

Recent achievements:

I modified #YAAC to "fix" three things:

  • Incorrect altitude tag in position reports (missing leading zeros)
  • Missing offset for repeater listening information in position reports
  • Remove the automatically inserted digipeater tags from position reports

YAAC is walking the fine line between proper encapsulation and abstraction, and OOP-hell that Java naturally generates
