🤖 The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. 🤖

I went into this book expecting to love it. To my disappointment, it was only ok.

Wu Zetian (fmc) is an interesting character and she is based on a real historical character (the only female empress of china). The journey she goes through is very much the stuff I like to read about, but this book did not go deep enough for me.

The idea of the story in itself is interesting and the plot has some unexpected turns. Yet the final twist came a bit out of nowhere. I liked the twist, but I wish it had been forshadowed a bit more (if it was, I missed the hints and in that case the blame is on me) instead of focusing on the obvious.

My main problem with this book is the lack of subtext. Everything is spelled out and explained. For me, this made reading a bit repetitive and boring.

And I did roll my eyes a couple of times, because the three main characters seem to be the only ones in the entire planet to see past the propaganda and think past the cultural norms. Is it believable that no one else ever thought about these things?

I recommend if you like:

So I just finished reading Iron Widow and omg. So badass and over the top, I loved it!!! Gonna immediately start reading the second book (Heavenly Tyrant).
You should definitely check it out if you're into sci-fi, epic mecha battles, Chinese history/mythology, feminism, rage and revenge and overthrowing the patriarchal ruling class.

#introduction

And Li Po makes an appearance, complete with poetry quoting. Except he's Li Bai, so I didn't realize who he was until I'd looked it up. Apparently the guy has a ton of names. Li Po is how it was published in English.

Slipping classical poetry into a kid's book? Smooth #XiranJayZhao ...
And not so much that you just skip reading it all (looking at you Tolkien). It's actually plot!

Xiran Jay Zhao – Sci-Fi / Fantasy Author

Zachary Ying & the Dragon Emperor (how TF do I hashtag that?) had me looking up the history of the First Emperor of #China. Supposedly his burial tomb had flowing rivers of mercury. Modern archeology soil testing shows much higher than expected background mercury levels in the area. Like it's evaporating through the soil.

I partly read this series because of the moniker "Chinese Percy Jackson" for #XiranJayZhao 's #ZacharyYing and the #Dragon #Emperor. A bit of a slow start that's mostly uncomfortable because you're reading about racism & microaggressions. But then it gets interesting fast and you won't put it down until you're done.

I finished it, then read it again. Several times.

The use of #Chinese mythos and history is fascinating. It's a shame they were excluded from the Hugos. #books #bookstodon

I rushed to be on the holds list for #Heavenlytyrant by #XiranjayZhao My #library finally tore it from other readers for me and I made my way through it. Book Review Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Xhao

voodoocactus's review of Heavenly Tyrant (Iron Widow, #2)

5/5: I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS BOOK FOR YEARS and so has the author! I didn’t remember much from Iron Widow but it didn’t really matter, Heavenly Tyrant sucked me right back in. XJZ warned on insta that this is different from Iron Widow so if people expect more of the same, they might be disappointed. However, I don’t think it’s so different? Sure, the giant robots kicking ass don’t come in until near the halfway mark but the VIBE and MOOD is the same as in Iron Widow. I'm NOT blurring out the review for spoilers because I don't think this is that much spoilery but be warned anyways. Zetian...

👋🏽 #bookstodon can someone explain to me why Heavenly Tyrant by #XiranJayZhao was disqualified from the NYT bestsellers list. ‘Cause I’m at a loss.

NYT claims it was removed because it “was published outside the United States.”

Tundra Books publishes Heavenly Tyrant. That’s a Penguin Random House imprint (a U.S. company). Yes, the Tundra imprint is headquartered in Canada, but so is Harlequin and their books show up on the NYT list all the time

So what’s going on @nytimes ?
