๐Ÿค– The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. ๐Ÿค–

I went into this book expecting to love it. To my disappointment, it was only ok.

Wu Zetian (fmc) is an interesting character and she is based on a real historical character (the only female empress of china). The journey she goes through is very much the stuff I like to read about, but this book did not go deep enough for me.

The idea of the story in itself is interesting and the plot has some unexpected turns. Yet the final twist came a bit out of nowhere. I liked the twist, but I wish it had been forshadowed a bit more (if it was, I missed the hints and in that case the blame is on me) instead of focusing on the obvious.

My main problem with this book is the lack of subtext. Everything is spelled out and explained. For me, this made reading a bit repetitive and boring.

And I did roll my eyes a couple of times, because the three main characters seem to be the only ones in the entire planet to see past the propaganda and think past the cultural norms. Is it believable that no one else ever thought about these things?

๐ŸฉธFor twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fuelled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to become the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry. When Sciona finally achieves her ambition and becomes a highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun.๐Ÿฉธ

Amazing, absolutely amazing ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ˜ญ

This book is so full of misogyny and racism, I fumed with rage on multipal occations. The amount of social commentary in this book is almost overwhelming. How can a person ram all this in one book and it still doesn't feel like force-feeding. At the same time it's right there in your face, but still so subtle it doesn't take away from the story itself. I have to admire M.L. Wang's skills as a writer for this.

The book is layered thick with it's themes, but not at the cost of plot or the characters. The plot is a rollercoaster, I had no idea what was coming my way until it was too late. I gasped out loud at the point of no return.

Characters are well-built, they have flaws and feel real. And the amount of meaningful conversations these characters have, ah I love it.

The ending is absolutely the right choice for this heartwrenching story. It is ultimitely sad, but with a hint of hope.

This book is so good, I would recommend it for everyone. But for the sake of this review...

I loved this so much! ๐Ÿ–ค

This is a start to a dark fantasy trilogy is full of interesting characters and plot twists I did not see coming. My reading journey can be summerized with words: "no!" "O shit!" "whaaat?" "O yes..." "wow" "wait a minute..."

Need I say more?

The fmc is tough, smart and resourceful, but she is not overly so. Her badassness feels real, did not come without cost and still develops during the story.

Writing style is at times very august, but mostly conversational. The darkness in the story is raw, but not overwhelming. I think grimdark needs enough light to make the dark parts really punch you in the gut, and this book has a great balance of both.

I did not expect spicy scenes in this book (don't no why 'cause The Empire of the Vampire had some too ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ), but I was happily surprised when the ๐ŸŒถ come along. Scenes were excellent, both well written and relevant to the plot.

When I hoped One Dark Window could have been darker and a little more adult, this trilogy seems to be the answer to my prayers!

Hands down, this is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read ๐Ÿ–ค I may be a bit biased, 'cause the story has all the things I personally love, but let's not focus on that.

Atmospheric, eerie and dark fantasy duology. A perfect read for those dark autumn nights ๐Ÿ

The worldbuilding is simplistic, but it has all the necessery parts and there is no need for anything more. The magic is unique! It may not be my favourite magic system by any means, but I haven't read anything similar before. And what about the plot! Plotting success!

I am kinda sad that I didn't really love any of the characters. And the romantic subplots were a little meh. The only relationship that really intrigued me was the one between Elspeth and the Nightmare.

If this would have been more adult and less YA, I think this duology would have had the potential to become one of my favourites. Because the more grimdark the better.

Objectively speaking this duology is really good and you should read it too, if you haven't already!

๐Ÿฐ Samantha Heather Mackey is an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at Warren University. In fact, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort โ€“ a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other 'Bunny'. But then the Bunnies issue her with an invitation and Samantha finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door, across the threshold, and down their rabbit hole. ๐Ÿฐ

What an odd book! Less about the Bunnies than I thought.

The story is definitely interesting, but yet somehow pointless. Or the point is too fancy for me to grasp on. Everything happens, but nothing changes in the end.

There are things this book shines in โœจ๏ธ Like, this is how you use nicknames properly. With purpose. And the writing style is eerie in the most enjoyable way.

So, had a good time reading this, but I did not get it. What is the message? Plot is punishing the mc for being a punching bag? Loneliness makes one a mess? The artistic pursuit of being a unique snowflake is pointless?
