Today's historic photo of the day: The northbound Riverina #XPT runs through the station at Binalong, NSW, November 2 1985.
Binalong is 354km south-west of Sydney on the NSW main South railway, which is also the main Sydney to Melbourne interstate line. The station building seen here is actually the second station in Binalong. The line was duplicated and deviated in 1915 bypassing the original 1876 station.
The XPT only arrived 5 minutes after it was supposed to depart this morning so I guess its no surprise we're stopped just past Picton when we're supposed to be at Central.
Getting the train from Sydney down to Melbourne last Tuesday, was pretty chuffed to see 3 XPTs (squint harder!) and all lined up at Central. Of course an Xplorer had to photo bomb tho'.
Während in den Ballungszentren rund um Städte wie #Melbourne und #Sydney beachtliche Kapazitäten auf der Schiene unterwegs sind, ist der #Fernverkehr in Australien eher ein Nischenprodukt für den Abenteuertourismus. Die Züge sind langsam, oft schon lange im Voraus ausgebucht und verkehren nur wenige Male am Tag.
Ein so ein Produkt ist der schon in die Jahre gekommene #XPT in New South Wales. Für den Nachtverkehr lässt sich ein 1. Klasse-Wagen in einen Schlafwagen umwandeln.
