So, this is very interesting... I know I used to find making clay balls in pottery class would help keep me focused and calm...

The #Meditative Art of #Hikaru #Dorodango: How Japanese Schoolchildren Turn Mud Into Shiny Spheres

A developmental psychology professor discovered hikaru dorodango in a Japanese schoolyard in 1999, and the practice is still inspiring artists worldwide today.

Excerpts: "No one is quite sure how hikaru dorodango originated, but it’s clear that it wouldn’t be as prominent as it is today without the efforts of Japanese developmental psychology professor Fumio Kayo. In 1999, Kayo was visiting a Kyoto nursery school to observe children at play when he noticed them deeply concentrated on forming playground dirt into shining spheres. It was a painstaking process even teachers would join in on. After working so long and so hard to create them, the dorodango would become treasured possessions of the children.

Making a dorodango involved locating the perfect soil, mixing it into mud, molding it into a sphere, and finally polishing it to perfection. The art requires patience, trial and error, and resourcefulness, causing it to be praised for its beneficial impact on early childhood development. Indeed, Kayo both published academic papers on the subject as well as developed a simple methodology that allowed him to introduce the activity to children across Kyoto. Hikaru dorodango was featured by Japanese public broadcaster NHK in 2001, and it has slowly gained prominence internationally—and among adults—since then.

"Other artists around the world have also found creating the mud balls to be both an excellent creative outlet as well as a grounding meditative practice. Artist Kiyoko Miki, for instance, uses different soil types and paint to create colored pastes, turning her dorodango into every color of the rainbow. She even drills holes into some to make charming flower vases."

A science fiction writer called it an “artifact of such utter simplicity and perfection that it seems it must be either the first object or the last.”

In den anschließenden Impulsvorträgen hält u.a.

Ab 31:31 informiert Marianne Weitershoff, Netzwerk HafenCity e.V.

We love the owls on our farm because they eat gophers and rats, hundreds per year.
We love the possums because they eat ticks.
We love the lizards, frogs, dragonflies, bats and other mosquito and pest eaters.

First phase of the new “chill ’n grill” area outside the wee house kitchen gets its roof just in the nick of time before rain tomorrow. The stone base, counter, pizza oven, barbecue and roof structure were constructed through two successive one-week Post-PDC Practical courses this summer. If there was ever any doubt that a bunch of people with little to no experience of construction and/or natural building are capable of doing awesome, solid and beautiful work, these folks have laid it to rest. You should all be super proud of yourselves!

With just over a week to go before our first Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course this year, we’re going flat out to have new facilities in place for our course participants! This is a new vermicomposting flush toilet right by the classroom.
.
And thanks to a couple of late cancellations, we even have a couple of spaces left on what has, for months, been a fully-booked course. Come and join us! And along with learning about ecological waste treatment, you might even get to do some earthen plastering on this very building.

A bamboo floor for a new shower. Time pressure for completion changed my thinking on this one. I was going to build up a stone floor from ground level a metre or more below and pipe the water to a mulch pit.
Now the water drains straight through the floor into a mulch pit beneath. The floor is built to be easily renewed when necessary if the bamboo doesn’t hold up to the repeated wet-dry cycling. Bamboo grown on the quinta.

A view of the main building through the cherry tree. Just 5 places left on our courses this year - 2 for July and 3 for August - so come and learn how to save the Earth and avert climate disruption by working with nature, not AgaInst it! (Do you see what I did there …?)
