Someone shared making it podcast with me, it's great, looking for others which are similar. #Creators, #geeks, #hackers, #woodworkers, #diy
I made these corner guides for myself and figured other #woodworkers might find them useful. Check it out if you're inclined. https://store.heartwoodandsteel.com/products/corner-guide-set?utm_source=copyToPasteBoard&utm_medium=product-links&utm_content=web
Corner Guide Set

General question for #woodworkers and artists. Do you get scammers inquiring about unfinished projects? I just posted an end grain board and have multiple inquiries about buying it. It feels a little fishy.

Hey, #woodworkers of Mastodon. Little help?

My next #DIY project is a bit daunting, a bit beyond my experience in wood shop.

I inherited a friend's ottoman after she moved overseas. The padded lid started sagging, so I pulled out some staples and looked beneath.

It's made of MDF (ETA: or chipboard?), which must've gone *crunch* when something too heavy weighed on it (could have been my kid, could have been the kids at the neighbours who were holding it for my friend after she moved).

Anyway+

Any #woodworkers out there, especially British ones who know what I mean when i say "I have a *small* garage workshop"...

Anyone got recommendations on cheap but functional electric thicknessers and planers for stock preparation?

I am tired of flattening, squaring, and thicknessing by hand with a 100+yr old hand-plane. But I don't have much space, and I don't do enough woodwork to warrant spending very much.

More a question of if there's anything worth bothering with given those constraints?

#Rowan aka #MountainAsh #tree #berries. Some birds feed on them. We have a tree that's been in our backyard since before our family bought our property in the early 90s.

There's also a big one growing at Welland Community Orchard too - they planted it there to boost pollination for one hybrid grafted fruit tree - one of the grafts are in the rowan family.

I harvest their berries to use for #PlantBased #NaturalDye making. They have high tannins in them.

#Woodworkers like the dense wood of rowan trees for carving/turning & making tool handles & walking canes.

For the #woodworking #woodworkers out there. Near #chicago. Go get dinner wood and build something awesome. Post a picture here.

Anyway, I'd like to replace the broken MDF with something sturdier.

I recently gained a point in Upholstery from recovering a headboard, so it'd be easy for me to peel back the layers of fabric and batting over the top of the lid, and then I could... IDK, drill and screw on a slab of radiata pine?

What kind of timber should I I be looking for? Something strong, cuz kid is around 40kg. Maybe this stuff? Says "structural"

Please boost for reach, thanks

@seawall that will work but it looks like it hasn't been braced properly so the same thing could happen again - even with structural ply.

I'd replace the two MDF boards with something sturdier too.

@renedox yes, that occurred to me too. I dunno why the makers fastened the upholstery buttons to the cross bars too, clearly they didn't anchor anything welp
@seawall any update on this? Has it been thrown out in frustration?
@renedox it's mostly fixed thanks, I just haven't restapled the velvet back in place

@seawall enthusiastic non-expert opinion!

I think that linked timber would be very thick.

Judging by photo it looks the panel is maybe 900x500mm? I suspect a smaller panel needs less thickness because it's bracing across a smaller area.

We have a storage box / seat and the timber in photo is 12mm. It's quite sturdy, no concerns about using it to stand/sit/whatever on.

(I think it's fancy ply, but only cos it's visible?)

@seawall I thought that "structural" meant "capable of bracing walls", but this page says it's about the glue & environmental considerations (ie, prob not necess for this). TIL.

Downpage of that linked board is https://www.mitre10.co.nz/guides-and-advice/guide/how-to-build-bench-seats-with-storage which probably has a suitable recommendation for "lid to sit on"

The Differences Between Structural and Non-Structural Plywood

What are the differences between structural and non-structural plywood? This is a great question for a beginner DIY woodworker to ask, so we've decided to detail the differences between these two plywood options on the Plyco blog.

@seawall OMG that link preview with too many dangerous AI builders on the structure is a lot!
@seawall gosh, I think it's real https://blog.plyco.com.au/hubfs/randy-fath-531056-unsplash-1.jpg check out the guitar player and the hats & beards. Delighted!
@seawall Yeah Ply should do a god job, I doubt you'd need to go sturdier than 18mm though?
That's flooring strength at that point.
