"I don't want [insert TV show, book, video game, or movie] to be woke."

I was gifted admission to a course about story-telling while job hunting and I learned about something that will have conservatives, the alt-right, and other people whining about "wokeness" lose their minds.

I recently learned about developing a high-concept idea before writing a novel or short story. While I could go on about being a fish out of water, brewing conflicts, or what hooks readers or fandoms into media, I want to focus on the idea of "universal themes."

Every good story from Frankenstein to Lord of the Rings has character development that surrounds universal themes of love, courage, trust, forgiveness, survival, confidence building, honour, acceptance of self or reality or certain circumstances, and multiple other themes that shape how a character sees the world.

The universal theme takes a regular story from being simply "good vs evil" or "the hero's journey" and helps that story stand out among other regular stories that not so many people read.

When I compare a lot of stories I consume to Biblical stories or right-wing movies like Sound of Freedom, Fireproof, Ladyballers, or Heaven Is For Real, I find that the right wing movies replace many universal themes with themes surrounding their political agendas (which further explains why those titles fanbase doesn't change much) while mainstream / secular stories or movies or TV start with universal themes surrounding human growth.

The common argument conservatives will claim is that universal themes are either too progressive or too "IN YOUR FACE" but that's far from always the case (I acknowledge it sometimes does happen). Sometimes either they read too much into the most popular movies they watch, or they just don't get where the original writer is coming from at all which all in all should be debatable.

I think now that I'm learning about high concept ideas, instead of telling conservatives to "stop whining about 'woke' " I'll challenge them with the question of what they think the themes are in a certain story. Only then will I go ahead and share my own interpretation of a story's themes, and then stop engagement afterwards.
