It's so easy to self-delude that the political system of the country you live in works pretty much OK, if daily life is middle-of-the-road.
But if its Government takes an authoritarian stance, and no longer even bothers to pretend it's serving the country, you can send them as many billets doux (petition them) as you like, and beg your MP to "do something!", and you clearly see that the direction of travel does not change.
