🦮 On rotation with a rescued four-legged friend

A border guard with the call sign "#Vesna" found a puppy while on duty near the #Russian border. The military took it out, called her #Zhuzhya, and took her to the unit.

#Zhuzha quickly got used to the friendly border family and even began to inform the soldiers about shelling.

And now the dog will have to get used to life in the rear. Together with "#Vesna," #Zhuzha went on rotation to the Lviv Region.

Finally getting my head around the Stencil Buffer, and damn it's useful! I'm using it to keep the duplicate mesh rimlight from overlapping with the model, so it's only rendered on the edges.

Masking the outline and model so they don't draw on top of eachother also means they can have separate opacity levels, for all kinds of neat ghosty silhouette effects.

Been iterating on this Vagrant Story inspired PSX vertex lighting effect, trying to finalize a few more features.

I believe VS used this rim light effect exclusively in cinematics, with a single light driving the effect.

For this, I've got it computing the combined influence of up to 8 lights, including their direction, color, and intensity. And (after several nights of fussing with matrix transforms) it creates an outline that adjusts to zoom levels, using clipspace projection!

I think it's a really striking effect, especially in motion.

This video shows a breakdown of the vertex lit outline effect's features, and makes the technique a little more obvious.

The rim light is an inside out duplicate of the model, slightly scaled up. It follows the brightest nearby light as it moves, and shrinks when it gets far away. It's lit more intensely than the model, but they peak at the same brightness, so they blend together in strong lighting.

Some parameters control the maximum intensity of the rim light, and how much it blends between the texture of the base model, and the pure light color.

Been working on a vertex lighting shader inspired by Vagrant Story, as an art trade with my pal @lovelyMia. My first shader done purely in Graphical C and HLSL!

It supports up to 8 simultaneous vertex lights, and optionally ignores surface normals, so light wraps around a character regardless of source direction. It also draws a textured, offset inverse hull in a second pass that creates a pseudo-rim-lighting effect. Very pleased with not only how lean it is, but also how nice it looks!
