The “Eye of Sauron” spotted in deep space

👁️ Okay, so the plasma jet in the blazar PKS 1424+240 isn't on a tower in Mordor, and it's not the fire-rimmed eye of a powerful tyrant. But if you don't think of Sauron's eye when you see the image released today, throw the first ring.

📡 Behind this deep image of the jet at unparalleled resolution are 15 years of ultra-precise radio observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and an international research team.

👁️ Zugegeben, der Plasmastrahl im Blazar PKS 1424+240 befindet ich nicht auf einem Turm in Mordor und es handelt sich auch nicht um ein von Feuer umrandetes Sehorgan eines mächtigen Herrschers. Doch wer bei dem heute veröffentlichten Bild nicht an Saurons Auge denken muss, der werfe den ersten Ring.

📡 Hinter diesem detaillierten Bild des Jets mit der bislang besten Auflösung stecken 15 Jahre ultrapräziser Radiobeobachtungen mit dem Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) und ein internationales Forschungsteam.

Cleaned out my work office as I'm working from home for a while, these are souvenirs dating from my time as a #vlba correlator operator, '94-98. These days they use disk packs, once they retired the tape drives I kept these two for the feels.

The signal of NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft -- the most distant human-made object -- has been spotted from Earth by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's 5,000-mile-wide (8,000-kilometer-wide) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), which links radio telescopes from Hawaii to St. Croix.
