@Elucidating Again: tangents aside antirez quit #Redis quite a while ago and even if you dislike him, redis and said YouTuber that doesn't invalidate the fact that Redis turned itself into #UnfreeSoftware and violated the #license of the #code contributed to them.

Whereas I'd let it slide if they'd been honest about their intentions from day one!

Noone's angry that @cperciva released #Tarsnap's client as * #SourceAvailable * because it never was #FLOSS nor was it * #rugpull|ed * with 703 contributors and many of the most active ones not being employed by him.

@xeraa @fuchsiii @puniko @linux_mclinuxface Case in point, #SSPL is an #AssholeLicense even more than #AGPLv3 because it's sole purpose is to commit #AssetDenial against #commercial users & #hosters.

It's worse than #GPLv3 because that one is lunacy in terms of #IP and espechally #Patents because it's solely ideologically motivated, but yeah...

IMHO everything under SSPL is #UnfreeSoftware in that it's #license terms are worse than a #SourceAvailable license as used by #Tarsnap because they are at least honest about the why...

I really hope not just #GAFAMs like #Amazon with #aws forked the pre-#Enshittification versions under #BSD and start publishing and maintaining these.

#Redis, like #Elastic and #MongoDB have chosen to kick everyone in the groin out of pettyness against commercial hosters, and I hope @Mastodon & @MastodonEngineering as well as @Gargron work hard to replace Redis with a real #FLOSS alternative like #RabbitMQ or even hetter, allow disabling a caching-DB in lieu of helping setup a #Ramdisk with a #PostgreSQL cache-DB on it.

@Yuki @novenary @norm The big takeaway is to NEVER EVER sign a "#ContributionAgreement" that allows the maintainers to turn #FLOSS into #UnfreeSoftware!

I'd certainly never would out of principle...

@[email protected] I sincerely hope everyone's gonna fork #Redis before they changed to #AssholeLicensing with the #SSPL which is a #NonFree #AssholeLicense. This is worse than #Copyleft but just blatant *Asset Denial* because *"We WaNt AmAzOn To PaY uS!" kinda bs... If you want to make money with #FLOSS, provide some good product and make it attractive to #donate and/or #buy some support. As a matter of fact, @[email protected] did try to *crowbar* #GPLv2 [or rather started it]¹ with #BusyBox and that failed miserably, because now everyone knows BusyBox as the litigatious² folks that one should just not use code from. There's a reason I chose #0BSD ³ for @OS1337 and it's because I most of the work I do is build and repackage #toybox + #musl / #Linux and I want people to use it as a *friendly licensed* foundation for their *#IoT* and *#embedded* projects down the line. And that means that I'll also accept contributions on the same license and not expect devs to sign away code under worse terms so I can turn it into #UnfreeSoftware the way Redis and others did... ¹ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkJkyMuBm3g&t=1607s ² https://www.busybox.net/license.html ³ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_licenses#0-clause_license_(%22BSD_Zero_Clause_License%22) ⁴ https://github.com/OS-1337/OS1337/blob/main/LICENSE.md

I want a reality TV show where a hardcore linux nerd and someone who knows absolutely nothing about technology trade their setups for a week. The Linux nerd gets one hour to explain their setup to the tech noob, then they're both on their own. The noob would have to wrap their heads around the alien Hyprland and Neovim bindings and figure out how to get things done without unfree software, and the linux nerd would spend most of their time complaining about the design decisions of Apple/Microsoft/Google and being paranoid that the unfree software is CIA spyware. No matter what, it would be quite entertaining.
