Postmark change could impact getting ballots, bills in on time
The U.S. Postal Service is making new changes in 2026, including adjustments to the postmark process, which could result in late fees and penalties for anyone mailing time-sensitive documents such as tax returns or bill payments.
A *lot* of small businesses depend on smallish shipments from abroad, either to resell--wherein they don't have enough storage and funds to buy larger amounts--or because they need smallish amounts of essential components of the things they make.
Ending the de minimis exception is already fucking them over; this holiday season is going to bankrupt many of them.
Trump ended the de minimis trade exception, which allowed international packages under US$800 of value to pay no tariffs, on August 29th.
As a result, the volume of mail to the U.S. has dropped by 80% by September 7th.
Droped. by. 80 FUCKING %. in two weeks.
I'm sure it all will be fine for small businesses in the U.S. come holiday season. Just dandy.

The U.S. Postal Service is turning 250. Saturday’s anniversary comes as the agency faces financial challenges. The postal service was established in 1775, when the Second Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as postmaster general. Its service predates the United States, launched nearly a year before the colonies declared their break from British rule. A key link between colonial leaders and the Continental Army, it also helped unify the fragmented colonies by spreading ideas of liberty and independence and would help shape the nation throughout its history. It still reaches nearly every American daily.
Houston is again among the national leaders in the number of dog bites and attacks on postal workers.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, there were 65 recorded dog bite or attack incidents in Houston against postal workers in 2024, marking the second year in a row the city ranked second nationally.
