You haven't experienced the full brunt of the health insurance insanity in the US until you've had to buy insurance from a marketplace.

If you don't need medical care, ever, then it is easy to figure out what to buy.

However, if you are a real person, who does need medical care, then you need a fucking crystal ball.

I currently have a plan. It works well for me. Is it expensive? Yes. But if I switch plans, there's no telling how much I'm going to have to pay under the new plan. The estimates presented by the marketplace are for textbook cases. I'm not a textbook care, and have never been a textbook case.

Yes, I looked at my EOBs... what my insurance pays is based on a discount they've negotiated... What's to say that the next insurance company is going to have as good or better a discount?

It's shit.

Complete and utter shit.

Insanity on a gigantic scale.

'tis the season!

What season?

Open season, during which we, wretched citizens of the US, can change healthcare insurance plans.

Double the fun if you are a freelancer who has to pick a plan in the marketplace.

I've been looking at methods and advice to pick the best plan. It boils down to "have a crystal ball that will tell you how much care you'll need next year."

The advice I get is about as good as the advice given in this skit:

Oh, and let's not forget that they need to tell you that it's been authorized a million times.

"What was that?"

"A text from my health insurance telling me my medication has been approved. So, as I was saying... hang on. I've got to take this call."

"Okay."

[Later.]

"I'm sorry. It was my health insurance telling me that my medication has been approved."

"They are thorough."

"Oh, I just got an email. Let me check it. It's them telling me that my medication has been approved."

[A clown shows up and asks:] "Are you, Jim Johnson."

"Yes."

Clown: [singing] "Your health insurance would like to tell you that your medicine has been approved!"

"Okay, thank you. So... hang on... and who the fuck are you?"

"I am a demon summoned by your health insurance company to tell you..."

"Oh, fuck off!"

I had an interest in checking out the Sequel Twiist AID system, but couldn't get a clear answer on coverage.

Welp, my pharmacy benefit shows to not cover it. At all.

Weirdly, it also says PA required.

I'm curious if this is how they're shuffling the coverage back to medical for plans where deductible and max OOP apply to pharmacy stuff as well. Which... I'm not sure if mine does.

If it sounds weird because why not just put it on medical, the company gets paid either way, it's because your employer can provide these coverages a la cart. This would be trying to shuffle the coverage to an entirely different company if they tried to push it onto medical in a weird roundabout way.

#usHealthInsurance so just heard this from a dr:
“if you need a MRI, you can go into an provider of the street and say ‘i don’t have insurance, how much?’ and it will be about $700, but if you go in and say “i have xxx insurance” it will be $4000.
they explained that is the only way for the provider to get the $700 back, after the insurance does it’s crap, but they leaves you on the hook for the $3300
1. wtf!
2. is that true
3. now i get why some health services have issues with insurance

It would be something if thousands of people showed up outside insurance headquarters dressed as Luigi on Mario Day (Mar 10, sorry Nintendo) to let insurers know they’re being watched.

Not advocating for violence, of course, but it’d be something.

Definitely worth a listen.

#BillOfTheMonth

“The goal was to understand how the U.S. health care system generates outsize bills and to empower patients with strategies to avoid them. We asked readers and listeners to submit their bills — and they kept coming. ‘Bill of the Month’ has received nearly 10,000 submissions, each a picture of a health system's dysfunction and the financial burden it places on the patients.” - Elizabeth Rosenthal

My further cogitations about the United Health Group CEO calling the health care system "flawed."

Imagine you have a diamond in your hand. The diamond does not catch the light in exactly the right way. So you call it "flawed." Fair enough...

No, imagine you hold a fucking turd in your hand. (Go ahead, just imagine it.) Now, this turd is definitely not a "flawed diamond", right? It is a fucking turd. No amount of polishing is going to turn your fucking turd into a flawless diamond.

Even as a fucking turd, however. Would you call this turd flawed??? Is there some sort of turdity standard that turds have to follow?

No, this turd is a turd. End of story.

The healthcare system in the US is this turd! It stinks. It makes me gag. Calling it "flawed" is complete nonsense.
