Success of UK rail drivers struggle means challenging ASLEF’s betrayal with fight for rank-and-file committees

The strikes testify to the determination of the drivers to oppose the erosion of their pay and conditions. But after almost two years, they also demonstrate the abject failure of Aslef’s leadership.

Members of Aslef at 16 train operators in England are embroiled in a long-running dispute over pay.

I have a day off from work today, been a good couple of days giving training. If anyone wants to know what being a train driver is really like just ask. By the way, it’s almost certainly not what you’d expect #trains #traindrivers
Last night was one of the most rewarding shifts I’ve had in a while. I had a trainee with me who has never driven a train before. We got some good driving done and each trip saw improvements. Still a way to go but I’m very happy with their progress 😊 #trains #training #traindrivers

“When I’ve asked how many years do you intend to not even give us an inflation pay rise, we haven’t had an answer,” Mick Whelan of ASLEF in the Guardian

I was involved (in a small way) with civil service pay on the trade union side from about 2010 up to last year, and this is the thing. The UK government patently does not believe that pay should keep pace with inflation. Or to put it another way, they believe it is right to make their own staff poorer over time by stealth. Eventually there is no option but to strike or leave the job, because it is obvious that otherwise your living standards will fall and fall until you cannot make ends meet.

Tory minister says strikes play into Putin's hands - here's why that's ahistorical nonsense

Tories know nothing about class struggle, let alone workers' solidarity now seen in the widening strike action that's affecting the entire UK
