A Tennessee appeals court has upheld the constitutionality of a law passed by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature to punish the Democratic-leaning city of Nashville. The 2023 law upheld 2-1 Tuesday would cut the size of Nashville’s consolidated city-county governing council in half, from 40 members to 20. Although it was written as applying to broadly across the state to both city and consolidated city-county governments, Nashville is the only Tennessee city meeting that definition with a council of more than 20 members. The law was one of several targeting Nashville after the council’s rejection of efforts to host the 2024 Republican National Convention in Music City. City officials say they are considering next steps.

A federal jury has convicted the former Tennessee House speaker and his onetime top aide of numerous charge in a secretive scheme to land taxpayer-funded mail business from state lawmakers after the pair fell from power due to scandals. Former Republican Rep. Glen Casada was found guilty of 17 of 19 charges Friday. His then-chief of staff, Cade Cothren, was found guilty of all 19 charges. In 2019, Cothren lost his job and Casada lost his leadership position due to scandals involving inappropriate text messages. The weekslong trial centered on their work while Casada remained a lawmaker. They used an alias for Cothren so fellow lawmakers wouldn’t know he was involved with a legislative mailing vendor.
