The VAX11/780 wasn't just a star computer of digital equipment, but No.1 at CoCom's top10 international export charts. With 1.0 VUP DEC challenged IBM 360 systems and beat them in efficiency.
Launched in late 70s, the legendary 32bit computer was running @ 5Mhz on a KA780 CPU with up to 128 MByte of RAM. In VMScluster systems of 2/4 they delivered up to 3.5 VUPs.

One industry player I am friends with would like to move away from #Linux as a base for their embedded software.

Coming to thing of fit, why are we still using #timesharing operating systems designed to solve one particular problem of the 1950s - how to let multiple users the way to access a single very expensive computer machine?

@philcowans ☝️ Time Reshared, mentioned in the previous toot, is a rare retrocomputing gem: a new blog that explores time-sharing operating systems.

Time Reshared

Exploring time-sharing operating systems

🖥️ Oh sure, everyone has an hour to spare for "a minimal proof of concept #timesharing OS #kernel on RISCV"—next you'll be #coding your own silicon in your #garage, right? 🙄 This is perfect for those who have too much free time and an insatiable desire to be the only person who understands their own obscure system software. 👨‍💻

Writing an operating system kernel from scratch

Exploring a minimal implementation of a time-sharing kernel on RISC-V, implemented in Zig, on top of OpenSBI.

Multics

Multics was a mainframe time-sharing operating system begun in 1965 and used until 2000. It was a major influence on subsequent computer operating systems.

Docencia en Derecho Civil. Dr. Luis Capote. Universidad de la Laguna

I feasted on the Computer History Museum today. I might like me some trees and running and flowers, but this is the thing that transported me Nabokov-style into my Hanover NH childhood, getting early education on paper.

I can feel that advance knob, the clips that held the paper. We would play games and then take the paper trail home and store it who knows why. Humans and computers are a horror show. I'm sure every old visitor to this place has similar flashbacks.

Unix and Multics

Story from the development of the Multics operating system. Unix, our famous child.

We've "progressed" in #IT so hard that we've come back to full circle to #timesharing systems. Replace the "mainframe" with the #cloud and replace the terminals with #smartphones and #chromebooks.

Soon the concept of a true
#personalcomputer is going to be an endangered species. :seija_coffee:

@[email protected] The other thing about the cloud, is that the cloud is the definition of "normie friendly". Which do you think sold more to normies, Chromebook ads or the meme worthy "server in the house" book Microsoft made? The latter comes off as something the FSF would have put out on their website as marketing material only to get mocked by commenters on The Register/ars Technica (I'm not even joking), and only diehard nerds bought or built at home Windows Home Servers to do the same idea of a backup. (📎3) RE: @[email protected] Big tech was the US government "contracting" it out to a different company so they could say it wasn't them. It's not just interest rates and "free services", we've had a 10 year dark age imposed by smartphone brainrot and a "competency crisis" as the news media will say. As you're seeing with a fedi instance that has been up for a long time going down because the DB is fucked, running a site of the scale of even shitposter.club requires more than just some NEET/nerd treating it as a weekend project. Suddenly, you'll see your instance shut down or picrel while someone who uses Twitter never deals with this, ever. They might be forced to fork out cash to keep using it, but as long as they don't push too hard like Gab did they'll stick around. (📎1) RE: ...
