In the early 60s the Staples Singers, now with Riverside Records, looked for an audience "beyond the ghetto", recording coffeehouse favourites such as Cotton Fields, Bob Dylan's Blowin' In The Wind and Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land. Such choices were mildly controversial at the time, but Staples was quick to defend them. "I think they're good material. I think it's time for the whole nation to start listening to something that means something, and think that this land belongs to everybody. If they would think like that we'd have a better United States."

During the 2018/2019 academic year, student photographers at the Urban School completed a long-term project where they engaged with and reflected upon the contemporary landscape through their perspective as young adults living in the Bay Area. At the beginning of the project, students visited This Land, an exhibition at Pier 24 Photography, an institution in San Francisco that houses the permanent collection of the Pilara Foundation and is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting photography. Jonathan Kamens 86 47I cannot recommend enough the #ThisLand #podcast from #RebeccaNagle at #CrookedMedia to anyone who wants to better understand how #NativeAmericans have been and continue to be oppressed in the US. They certainly didn't teach me any of this in school. At the very least, the most recent episode, explaining the recent #SCOTUS decision about the Indian Child Welfare Act (#ICWA), is well worth a listen.
