I’ve finished #TheWobblies (minus the afterword) and it strikes me as quite tragic, the way that the original IWW fell to pieces. A lot of it, of course, was based on personal feelings; that’s impossible to avoid in any organization, but the interpersonal problems in the 20s were exacerbated by jail sentences, communist and soviet sym/antipathiea, and the ever-present tug-of-war between the centralizers and decentralizers. Joe Hill, Frank Little, and Wesley Everest were three activists for the #IWW in the 1900s and 1910s, and were killed for attempting to organize the working class. Hill was executed by the state of Utah under a deeply suspicious murder conviction; Little and Everest were killed by mobs, instigated by bosses and government officials. Their killers were never punished.

I’m only through the introduction in #TheWobblies so far. Three bits of marginalia: highlights on the IWW’s membership numbers and a passage about their representation of the “submerged fifth,” and lastly this deeply ominous note about right wing violence: “Just wait a few years.”

The next #RadLit I’m reading is #TheWobblies by Patrick Renshaw. My copy is a 1968 reprinting, which I just noticed today has marginalia from a previous owner! So I will be sharing this mysterious person’s insights as well.
