Some half-baked reflections on Clint Eastwood. Might delete later!

Callahan: "If that's all, Captain, I've got work to do."
Chief: "But not in homicide."
Callahan: "What ... ?"
Chief: "You've been transferred to personnel."
Callahan: "To Personnel? ... That's for assholes."
Chief [stands up]: "I was in Personnel, for ten years!"
Callahan]: "Yeah."

Not defending the Dirty Harry films, at all, they are quite horrible. But this scene from The Enforcer is great.

Never could reconcile Eastwood's late elegiac films such us Unforgiven with his Dirty Harry period, except that one is the counterpoint to the other. The early films celebrate paranoia, violence, misogyny, you name it. The late films show how this model fails. Perhaps the depth of the later films comes precisely from their opposition to the early ones?
