I remember after the Japan M9.0 quake, on Mar 11 in US/Pacific time there was a #tsunami warning for the West Coast. I was aware but not concerned, not being at the coast. I was chasing the CNSP-08 Ham Radio balloon which was launched from San Jose. Driving over CA152 Pacheco Pass, a usually-empty clearing was packed with parked cars. I realized people were fleeing up mountains fearing an asteroid tsunami from movies. 50ft/15m elevation is plenty, except at an M9 quake center. #geology #history

15 years ago, March 11, 2011: M9.0 Tohoku Earthquake and Pacific-crossing #tsunami caused devastation in northern Japan, a country which is probably the best prepared for quakes and tsunamis. Many cities' tsunami barrier walls were overtopped.
