I was actually in the mood to work on some music for the first time in a while and just remembered that my drum machine can run on batteries, so I’m gonna sit in the garden for a bit and work on some beats. It’s a shame the lights on the buttons are a bit hard to see, though.
It’s a bit annoying how it’s a bit tough to see which of these buttons are lit up when it’s sunny tbh.
I thought I’d have a go at importing some chopped up bits of the Amen break to my drum machine and see how it goes, and it seems to work ok. I’ll have to play around with this a bit more, I reckon.
Drums are from the #TR6s and all the fills use the weird fill stutter effect that it does, which I thought sounded delightfully inhuman/robotic. Lead is a #Arturia #MicroFreak sound I made, as is the robotic voice saying "machine" in various different ways in the second half. Fake guitar in the first half is an #opsix patch and a #Hydrasynth patch layered together.
The file name for this is "BeatzNBeatz" and that is definitely where it all began. By this point, I had all my (then new to me) drum machines on hand, and I decided it was time to give them all a little test drive. I programmed a beat on each one that felt more or less compatible and that was my starting point. In terms of its #arrangement this track features the #TR6s drum machine, the #Arturia #MiniBrute2s on bass, #Hydrasynth does the deranged organ, #opsix on the main chord/stab sounds and one repeating sequence. That was roughly where I left the song in the #recording phase. When I came back to it in #production, I added #KawaiK4r (some harmonic support for the chords) and #Roland #AlphaJuno (MKS-50) to it (lovely analog choir, recorded hot/distorted)
This song started with the #Roland #TR6s drum machine. I'd only had it for about two or three days at that point, so it was fun and inspiring to play with and I came up with some solid beats in short order. Chose the key thinking I might play some guitar (I did not, but E minor it would be all the same).
