The word fika emerged some 100 years ago. It's back slang for "kaffi", which is how kaffe (coffee, but you got that) is pronounced in many Swedish dialects. Having originally meant just "coffee", it has expanded to include any edibles you take with your coffe -- but most of all the bonding, the time to breathe. I'd say fika is a state of mind.

With an 3 cups per person daily, Sweden ranks 7th in the world for coffee consumption. A Swede's worst nightmare might be that coffee runs out (who can't relate to this?).
